I was just told by a cellular one rep that the handheld update cannot be downloaded over the air.

Is this true?

What about the people who have 1000's of BB devices to update.

Any Ideas?

I wouldn't trust the Cellular One rep. RIM has stated that OTA is an option. You can push out an update tool which will have the Blackberry go out and get the needed update. This is one way you can do it, but you will not have to do a cable install. There is one exception I guess, if a device has an updated OS, and you want to update that, it can't be done OTA. But if you don't want to update the OS, you can use the patch utility.

You can load the update (unless you are talking a full OS update, like updating a Cingular 8700 to .377) OTA, and user initiated without the patch manager. All the user has to do is go to BlackBerry once it is out, and the correct patch is loaded. So it doesn't seem to me he was right at all. Even units that have had an OS update that has the new DST dates can get the patch OTA, the new OS isn't the only way.

Default More fuel for the fire..

If you plan to deploy the DST2007 patch wirelessly to handhelds in your environment via a Software Configuration on the BES, you MUST have the handheld software for newer models installed on the BES.
IE: if your folks have the Verizon 8703e, you will need to download and install the 8703e handheld software to your BES BEFORE you push the patch to that device. Older devices should be okay.

To check to see if the devices in your arena are covered, do a search for device.xml on your BES and look at the list. If you don't see a device listed there that is connected to your BES, you better start downloading the handheld software from the service provider!

All of this was prompted a few days ago by KB12016 - How administrators can assign DST upgrades wirelessly to BlackBerry devices. Presently removed from public viewing by RIM; they told me they are rewriting it because it was "poorly worded."
My question to them was:
Under Task 1, step 1 - "On the host computer, install the BlackBerry Device Software for the BlackBerry devices that will receive the DST upgrades." I'm confused by this statement. Does this mean I need to install the Device Software on the BES for every TYPE and OS of device in my environment? (ie: 13+ versions of devices/OS?)

REPLY received: (sic)
We have positively determined that you will NOT have to install all OS software on the BES for older BlackBerry Handhelds. Only newer devices recently released will require the OS software install on the BES.

Let's hear it for Advance Planning! ::crickets::

Handheld software is only required if you don't install the patch on the BES itself or if you are running 4.0.1 and want to push software to a 8707 or 8100.

So.....let me see if I have this straight. All 4 of my servers are at 4.0.6. I apply the patch to them, and then only need to push it to the 8707 and 8100 devices? Not the 8703e's that I deployed last week?

If you are at 4.0.6 you shouldn't need to apply any handheld software, you can just skip that step in creating the software config.

That not quite the way I interpreted it from RIM. They gave the impression that the server AND the handhelds need a patch. The serer first so the patch could be correctly applied to the handhelds via software config.

I was 100% confused, now I think I'm 200% confused.
We run BES 4.1 SP2 and to the question about the Hot Fix #3 (DST server patch), I read a post that said the server patch is ONLY for any future DST changes; in other words, in the event DST changes AGAIN.
As a matter of fact, a RIM document listing the ORDER of actions, it lists the device patches AHEAD of the server BES patch.

JGonzalesGus: you are 100% correct the Server patches are for future changes

DarthBBerry: You can push the software configuration with BES 4.0 and higher so no BES upgrades are required.

Thanks for the clarification, CrackBerry Addict.

One more question: in this same thread, a few posts ago, it was written:
"...if your folks have the Verizon 8703e, you will need to download and install the 8703e handheld software to your BES BEFORE you push the patch to that device. Older devices should be okay."
AND
"To check to see if the devices in your arena are covered, do a search for device.xml on your BES and look at the list. If you don't see a device listed there that is connected to your BES, you better start downloading the handheld software from the service provider!"

We use Verizon 8703e and looking at the device.xml file, the 8703e IS THERE. Does that mean I do NOT need to patch my 8703e's (even though they have 4.1.0.344)?

We have been doing alot of testing in GroupWise. If you apply the MS workstation DST patch, appointments already scheduled in the extended DST will be wrong as soon as you apply the patch. We have yet to deploy the MS patch and are working on a remediation plan. The real kicker is the situation only gets worse if you don't update all of your workstations at the same time.

I guess my question is when should we upgrade our Blackberry devices and BES Server and in what order relative to applying workstation patches?

We still have vendors who haven't released patches for their applications. Be careful about updating your workstations, could have an un-intended affect on your other applications.

Hey all,

Have some questions here and in need of some serious help. I'm a traditional pbx guy that got thrown into taking care of a BES with nothing more than a 1 day class. I'm extremely new to the whole BES enviroment(like 2 months). We are running exchange 2000, and BES 4.0.1. From what I have read from you guys here so far is
1) I'll have to load updated HH software on my BES for 8700's(rest of my models are old, 6230 and 7290s).
2) Wait for the updates from RIM for the patch. Once that is release is where I'm a little foggy.
3) Do I apply the patch via softare config? If so, what is the setup like?
4) is there anything else I'm missing? (exchange is being update by exchange team).

any help is appreciated for this newb. thanks.

This is only true if your version of Desktop Manager that you are running the software config from is older. Check your device.xml file and see if you need to add a line for the 8703e. Alternately, you could just install Desktop Manager 4.2.

2) Wait for the updates from RIM for the patch. Once that is release is where I'm a little foggy.

When it gets released (today, they say), I'm sure everyone will be happy to help.

3) Do I apply the patch via softare config? If so, what is the setup like?

Yes, if you want to do it that way. I'm going to. Setup is quite easy, but if you've never done it before it can be confusing.

4) is there anything else I'm missing? (exchange is being update by exchange team).

Not really.

I guess we just check to see if TimezoneOtaPatcher gets installed on the device?
