If you plan to deploy the DST2007 patch wirelessly to handhelds in your environment via a Software Configuration on the BES, you MUST have the handheld software for newer models installed on the BES.
IE: if your folks have the Verizon 8703e, you will need to download and install the 8703e handheld software to your BES BEFORE you push the patch to that device. Older devices should be okay.
To check to see if the devices in your arena are covered, do a search for device.xml on your BES and look at the list. If you don't see a device listed there that is connected to your BES, you better start downloading the handheld software from the service provider!
All of this was prompted a few days ago by KB12016 - How administrators can assign DST upgrades wirelessly to BlackBerry devices. Presently removed from public viewing by RIM; they told me they are rewriting it because it was "poorly worded."
My question to them was:
Under Task 1, step 1 - "On the host computer, install the BlackBerry Device Software for the BlackBerry devices that will receive the DST upgrades." I'm confused by this statement. Does this mean I need to install the Device Software on the BES for every TYPE and OS of device in my environment? (ie: 13+ versions of devices/OS?)
REPLY received: (sic)
We have positively determined that you will NOT have to install all OS software on the BES for older BlackBerry Handhelds. Only newer devices recently released will require the OS software install on the BES.
