Are there any shortcuts for initiating a text message?

dial from home screen option needs to be set to "no"

Phone Dialer screen > Options > General Options > Dial from Home Screen

confirm delete
phone list view
show my number
default volume

I don't think you can disable "dial from home screen" on a 71xx.

Not that I'm aware of. I have my 7130 set up for the shortcut button to take me to the messages screen and from there I can click to compose. Not as quick as a home screen shortcut, but about the best that can be done on the 71xx series.
