I am a little confused. Blackberrys run "software", which is why they are able to very easily be updated with other companys software. For example I am running sprints software/os on my verizon BB.

However, what is the story with the firmware of the phone, and is there such a thing and can it be updated with the BB?

Sorry if that question was vauge, its straight in my head.

I have long been a cellphone modder (straight firmware), but this Blackberry software vs. firmware thing has been confusing me.

Firmware is the OS, the basic for your phone to work or dial, software is add on like bbtoday bblight, berry 411 google map, jivetalk etc...

Also when you install the OS/firmware, it is similar to installing windowsXP, the extra that comes with the OS can be de-select like the language pack, games, but some core component will be grey out which is needed to run on the phone.
