I would think the same way if you were calling the other party (in the UK) international; place +44 in front of their phone number and give it a try. Let us know if that works.

Just a note that most (all?) US carriers charge for International SMS, even if you have an unlimited messaging plan. T-Mobile, for example charges $0.15 per message.
