Default Anyone using WLAN 7270 Devices on their BES yet?

Please Login to Remove!

Just wondering how many of you have started pushing out 7270 WIFI devices on your BES? We're moving towards that initiative and i'd like to hear your thoughts.

I guess I'll be the first ;) We received two complimentary units and we're going to give them a whirl. My colleague is launching our WLAN initiative on campus so we're eager to remove the carrier solution for the "corridor warrior/desk jockeys" who don't need to travel.

...why not just wait on the WWAN/WLAN BBs? Give them an option for using it elsewhere, ya know? Same security policies can be applied, I believe (all are available in 4.1.3). Just a thought. I'm sure having an 8320 or 8820 would be much more appealing than the now-aged 7270.

I have tested one in the past (they work well), but I have not tried the new OTA WLAN features in the latest BES releases yet.

I deployed 33 of these to our Local IT guys. They can obviously only use them while in the office (Never got the VPN part to work), which is all they need. My firm just wants our IT Helpdesk types to have access to email and our web-based Helpdesk System if they are walking around the office.

We have been using them for over a year now and havent really had any big problems. My only problem is how expensive they were when we bought them. I think we paid like $500/ea.

The 7270 I have works nicely, I use it mainly as a SIP phone, I've got the VPN working so i can make calls from the SIP server from home.

What files are needed for the SIP phone? Perhaps they can be exported and installed via javaloader to newer devices for the same purpose?

We're targeting our "corridor warriors". The personnel who aren't required to leave the campus to continue workflow. These include Help Desk and Application Developers. I know this post is old but i'm going to embark on this iniative now that my plate has semi-cleared.

That is incorrect. GPS files need a GPS receiver either internal or external, SIP phones only need an internet connection to access the SIP server.

a) Not the BlackBerry implementation. The cod files would be hard coded to use the wifi api and not the cellular interface.
b) Even if you could there's not enough bandwidth on a standard cell connection (aside from maybe EVDO) for a voice conversation

a) Hard coding is possible, however with the 8820/8320 it might work unless it's coded to only use UMA and not SIP.

b) We were looking at doing this on some 8707's, they should be able to handle lower ping times.

a) 8820 and 8830 use a service book (either from the carrier or BES) which only works over wifi

b) Theoretically yes, but you'd be screwed if you dropped to GPRS from UMTS. Regardless, see a

Finally got the 7270 up and running on our BES.

One question though. I am missing the ability to "Compose PIN" in the Messages area. I can't receive PIN messages on the 7270 as well. Seems like it's missing some type of provisioning for the PIN messages. Any ideas?

Does anyone know where you can even PURCHASE a 7270? I'm interested to try one out and if I could get one at a reasonable price give it a whirl.

Precisely. I know there can't be many out there if eBay is void of them. But while I was playing around installing BES server, I noticed their reference to WiFi enabled devices and specifically mentioned the 7270 and when I saw that I could hook up a 7270 on WiFi to a LAN based BES server and hook it into SIP on my VoIP setup - I was almost in instant heaven with the idea. Haha, a Blackberry curve for on-the-go and a Blackberry just for the home office.

So geeky!!

You have to purchase it directly from RIM since it's not a carrier based device. Expect an average price of around $500/unit. You can negotiate a discount when you buy over 10 units at a time.

BTW, PIN messaging is not possible with the 7270.
