I'm new here, so pls forgive any ignorance on this topic.

I have an 8700c BB and I'm using Cingular. It is using BES.

I use the BB as my phone and I'm unable to make outbound phone calls when the handheld is locked. It currently locks upon holstering and after 1 hour.

I know that my company DOES allow for placing phone calls while the handheld is locked, b/c collegues with other BB devices (not 8700c) can do so.

I spoke to our BB Administrator, and they are perplexed as to why the device does not allow for making outbound calls when locked.

I was told to go to Settings > Options >Security Options > General Settings > and there should be an option for making calls when the device is locked.
However, there is no option for this on my screen.

Any ideas? It is driving me nuts having to enter my password first, to make a phone call.

What version of the handheld OS are you running? Options / About will show it.

Sounds like you are running an older operating system on your device. Here is a thread that is similar to your topic in that you want to make out bound calls while the device is locked:

You will need to update your OS.

Thanks for the information. I followed the link you listed and it looks like that is exactly what I need, an OS upgrade. However, the link is for T-Mobile, I think. Does this matter?

I looked on the Cingular forums to see if they had released the Handheld upgrade to v4.2 and I don't see it.

I have a TMO phone and I upgraded to Optus 4.2. Unless you really want / need the specific firmware / OS from Cingular. Otherwise, a BB 8700 from Cingular is same as TMO 8700 (hardware) but with different version of OSes.
