IM programs, data or sms usage?

I'm getting conflicted answers here. I'm currently using IM+ for chatting on Yahoo with my Pearl because the official Yahoo Messenger client still doesn't work with Cingular. Most posts around here are telling me that both of these use data for chatting, but after calling Cingular today they said it uses SMS messages. But you never know if the person you're talking to is competant or not.
My wife has a Samsung Sync and it comes with Yahoo Messenger on it. Cingular also said her using that takes up SMS messages. We both have unlimited data plans with 1000 SMS messages.
Anyone know for sure? Honestly I'd be inclined to believe people here than some random person at Cingular who didn't even bother to look anything up.
