You get an email with an attachment, you need to view and edit that attachment [doc], so can you:

- save that attachment to the microSD card
- hook the BB up to your laptop
- transfer the file to your local drive
- edit
- transfer back to the BB
- attach the file to the reply and send it off

I ask because I don't really want to spend the money for a laptop plan for my vaio because the above scenario is only needed every now and then, but when I need it I always seem to be on the road and not close to a connection. Oh and I don't want to buy/install a third party app for editing on the BB....I'm not a n00b to BB's.

I currently run an 8700 [which is great], but I really dig the capability of storing some frequently need forms on the device and sending them the minute I need to.

Also, can you listen to vm's that come in .wav format?

I went to ATT [cing] and looked at the 8300 and I must say it sure looks like a fine piece of equipment! Size, Full QWERTY, blah, blah, blah......

BB is still behind when it comes to editing attachments...

You cannot save attachments to the microSD card, so the answer is no.

And there are actually many other reasons this can't be done, too (i.e. you can only attach pictures to an email).

I know dynoplex was looking into adding functionality to their solution to provide support for what you are asking for. Since i do not use their software i cannot confirm or deny but i remember reading about it on the forums before

Wow, that really blows. What the hell is the storage for, music and photos only? IMO, RIM is a little late on the photos and music thing for me 'cause I already have too many ipods and too many cameras.

Looks like I can keep my 8700 for a while longer.

The 8300 still looks like a sweet device!

no but you can teather your laptop to your 8300 with bluetooth and check your email from your laptop via webmail. and edit it and send it. =)

I could, but the teathered plan cost more $$, no?

If I could just do a pay per use basis that would work, because it's not every day I need this.

Wow, I had to try this just to be sure, but yes, you cannot save your attachments to the media card.


HOWEVER - You CAN create a new mail, and "Attach File" FROM the media card!



So, if you had a bunch of canned forms or Word docs or even PDFs (Yes, tried it!) you can send those FROM your media card if you downloaded them via your USB cable from your computer.

So there is only one missing piece to the puzzle, being able to save the attachment to the card from the email on the BB....hmmmmm, time for an email to RIM!

You cant save doc or pdfs or excel sheets or any of that period not yet atleast. if you have ur laptop already just connect ur blackberry to the laptop and use it as ur modem to access your email/download the file. then edit and resend as u wish.

if you have an unlimited blackberry data plan then u can use the modem no problem without an extra charge

some carried do have caps on their "unlimited" data plans though if ur just using it for that it shouldnt be a problem

Well, for one this limitation makes sense... at least on the BES server. The BlackBerry never really retrieves an attachment directly. Instead the BES server 'converts' known attachments (Office Documents) into something simpler that the BB can display. Hence why the original document cannot be saved, it was never downloaded. Some document types, like PDF are converted to pictures, which you CAN save (you can save any picture attachments), but not in their original format.

Hmm, not comparing apples to apples, but on my 8700 if I get a .PDF emailed to me it opens just like a word or excel doc. Now if I get an efax .PDF it opens like a pic [which is almost worthless because you cant' see it for shit].

Are you saying if I emailed you a .PDF on your 8300, you could only view it like it was a pic?

Yep.. same thing in my 8700... i can zoom in, view all sizes, etc.. but it is just a picture of the PDF..

only with tmobile is tethering free..
w/ att tethering is like $60 more a month.
