I have the impression it was not intentional, as I loaded the 8800 gmaps onto my 8300 and it does have the GPS functionality still, it was just the 8300 version that didnt... hopefully, anyhow.

I would have believed that initially if the GPS option hadn't disappeared in BBMaps at the same time.

Hot dog... 1.6.1 works! Ok, now I'll at least consider forgiving Google.

Thanks all,

Not trying until I know for sure. I've had reports of it not available. You'd think google would let us know what's going on. On their forums the respond to every issue but this. Why the mystery?

Why not try it? You can still go back to the 1.5.4 using the link above.

Since I had lost GPS when upgrading a few days ago, I was relieved to fall back to 1.5.4 and get GPS back -- so I was reluctant to try 1.6.1 too. However I just tried it, and lo and behold the GPS option is, indeed, back. When I go into Blackberry Options / Advanced Options / Applications, the entry for Google Maps shows the following:

Description: Google Maps (dc=Web)
Version: 1.6.1
Vendor: Google
Modules: gmaps8300_v4_2_L1

In the Maps application itself my menu options shows as Bluetooth GPS, and when I select it, I get a dialog box asking to select a GPS Device. In my case, since I don't have a BT puck paired, I see "no devices found", but I'm comfortable now that when I *do* in fact pair a BT GPS puck with my Curve, I'll have the functionality.

As John noted, it appears that Google gave us back the functionality that had been removed before. Not sure if it was intentional - and that they were pondering caving in to the pressure that we *believe* AT&T is putting on Google and RIM - but then "saw the light", or if it was just an oversight that they fixed. Either way - I'm glad to see that Google maps for the Curve doesn't appear to be GPS-crippled.

Yay!

I just deleted Google Maps v1.5.4 from my Curve, downloaded (OTA) v1.6.1, clicked on the Bluetooth GPS option on the Blackberry key, and the Freedom Input GPS puck went to work. The GPS functionality is definitely there.

Default Google Services

I installed Google Maps by way of Google Services that includes GMail, GNews, and GSearch. When I go to Options/AdvancedOptions/Applications I see only Google Services in Bold.
I click on it and I see a lot of modules installed but with no revisions. Anyone know how to tell what versioin of GMaps I have? It listed seperately as far as I can see in Options.
