Maybe someone has an idea to tackle this one:
A hotshot in my company has an old blackberry 7290. He wants to change this to a new one but his address book won't synchronise. Normally I tell people "bad luck" and tell them to manually type it over.
This time the guy can really hurt my boss and as a bonus there are more then 1500 items there.... ouch.
I felt lucky and reactivated the bb on the server. No synchronisation.
Via a bb manager no such luck either.
Looked at address book managers but they all depent on the sync function in bb manager.

Why not deactivate it and try to sync it in BB Desktop Manager? Sync to MS Outlook, or least an ascii file?

At least do a Backup in DM, and you can as a last resort extract the address book out of the *.ipd file with this tool:

Did just that. The problem is that BB mngr wont do a backup. Once youve got the ipd file i am back in business. So I am probably looking for something to install on the blackberry and then get the data from the current address book.

(Background Info: Usually its enough to send out a service book or to deactivate sync on the bb and enable it again).

Do you have the latest version of Desktop Manager 4.2 Service 2 on the PC?

Nope. 4.2 Is the one I used. I'll have it a go.
I didnt dare to delete a service book on the bb and then push it out from the server again. Is this do-able without the risk of permantly destroying the address book?

Maybe I missed something, but did you backup his old device and then do an Advanced restore of the Address Book to the new one?

Oh, and 1500 is nothing. I had a VP with 7000 - he was on my sh*t list.

Juwaack, can't he easily delete the service book on the BB and push it again?
That has nothing to do with address book database.

Yes, deleting service books won't do anything to the data.

But still good to have a backup

No, in the backup screen the address book is greyd out. So doing a backup makes no sense. It would solve my problems though

Sh*titlist. Thats a good one. This sucker would be No1. He came in with a Palm Vx with the question to move all data over to the bb. Of course with a remark Please and Yesterday. Not!

Delete the Desktop [SYNC] Service Book | Run Desktop Manager | Got Backup/Restore Advanced | and then you are able to back up the address book.

Once you have the new device, transfer it over.

Using notes or exchange?

Yep. You can only see it in the Device Databases view under the advanced button in an greyd out style.

Notes. The Desktop [SYNC] Service Book is what I had in mind. Tnx for the reminder. Just wasnt sure if anything would brake (broke?) if I deleted it.

Before you do that, try this:

- On the BES, open up the properties for this user and disable wireless sync (what version of BES are you on?)
- Connect the device to his PC (I'm assuming this is where the backup was done?)
- Start Desktop Manager and do the Advanced Restore. This time the Address Book shouldn't be greyed out from the backup file.
- Enable wireless sync on the BES for the user

thats another option but being you dont need the device and he is being swapped out, no harm in deleting the Desktop SYNC Svc book

My Bad. There has never been a backup. ( FYI: I use the latest and greatest - 23 oct is it? - so Domino 703 and Bes 414 rollup 2 - 800 users). Just saying if only a backup could work. Hallelujah

(the device is likely to be 4.0.2)

Ahhh.....no backup. If you still have the old device intact you could still do these steps.

Or delete and undelete the Desktop[SYNC] service book.

Also, If your using Domino, Check the Path of the PIM Sync Settings, it maybe that the path isnt corect or filled out (address book section).
