i am a current resident of the united states and traveling internationally. i brought my 8320 with and have it connected to a wi-fi service here in the hotel. should i make any phone calls to the states i would assume this is a nonchargeable call, assuming i only have the wi-fi network enabled. can anybody verify this?

From what I have read in the forum, it should be as a local call since it's going over the internet, but I can't say with 100% certainty as I have never tried it myself.

Actually, I believe you will be charged the Long Distance charges, just not the International Roaming charges and not minutes usages (other than the LD toll charges).

EDIT:

I'm not sure I'm right on this... Can anyone answer definitively?

Pulled right from T-Mo's webiste.

Can I make or receive calls from outside of the United States?

T-Mobile cannot guarantee Wi-Fi service outside your home or US HotSpot locations.

Calling from international locations with your T-Mobile HotSpot Phone and Wireless Router works the same as if calling from the US. The normal domestic rates apply when making a call to a location within the US, and international long distance applies when making a call to a location outside the US.

NOTE: There are no call hand offs to or from networks other than T-Mobile USAxxx8217;s network, and Wi-Fi calls cannot be made or received at T-Mobile HotSpot locations outside of the US.

The way it'll be charged is just the same as if you were physically in the US. Tmobile at this point is not distinguishing calls made overseas on wifi and calls made in the US on wifi. I made some calls while traveling in Asia without any extra charges. In fact, like almost all of my UMA calls, they don't even show up on my call log.

I wonder do you need to have TMO@Home plan in order to make UMA calls?

No. All it does is use up your minutes as if you were calling on a cell site. I do not have any H@H add-on and I make almost all my calls over wifi.

Here's the million dollar question... Without a H@H add-on your UMA usage comes from your regular plan allotment. Now if you're overseas, what time zone do they use to determine nights and weekends vs peak time?

Not that it'd matter much to me, I'm more curious then anything else.

I believe it would depend on where you were. All calls over UMA go to a regional cell site/switch for connection to the phone on the other end. It will go to the closest switch so if you were in Europe it would likely go to the regional site in the Northeast. If you were in Japan it would likely go to a west coast site. That's how it was explained to me, anyway. As far as what time zone in the US, I couldn't tell you. I never pay any attention to that.
