I'm specifically looking for something that will tell me when I'm running low.

btw - I originally thought I had a memory problem, but have since realized it's not a memory problem I'm having - it's file space (Device Memory).

I sometimes see my FileSpace go to zero.

I know I can use Alt-Cap-H to see my current status, but I'm looking for something that will:

1. Tell me when I'm running low
2. Allow me to browse around and see who/what is using/wasting space (like Windows Explorer, or better)

Same difference. Follow the suggestions in the FAQs. Files are stored in the device memory.

A followed many FAQs in this board and 3 others a while ago...

I still see the FileSpace sometimes go to zero.

Can you help me understand why Memory-Up would show me that I have 32MB of memory total, with 19MB free and 12MB used, but Alt-Cap-H says I have 3MB free file space of 60MB total file space?

I don't get it...

I don't know why memory up does whatever, but you have much more than 32 total, like 64. 3mb file free is about a fifth of what i would recommend free--15-20 free.

Most days i would like a fifth, but not in memory. ;)

I have read all the FAQs here (1, 2 and even 3) and on three other boards, and they help for a short time but something keeps filling me up. I guess I have a memory leak...

I asked eMobiStudio, the author of MemoryUp-Mobile RAM Booster (Specially Designed for BlackBerry), this question:

I'm running Memory-Up v2.0 on a BlackBerry 8820 and it's telling me that I have:

Total Memory: ~32MB
Free Memory: ~18MB
Used Memory: ~14MB

Yet, when I press the help keys (Alt-Cap-H) it tells me:

File Free: ~0.7MB
File Total: ~61MB

Isn't memory and file space the same thing on a BB?
Why does Memory-Up only see half of what I have?
What am I missing?

and here's their answer:

The "File Free" in your BB is not the same with "Free Memory" in MemoryUp. As the "File Free" indicates the free disk space in your BB, "Free Memory" in MemoryUp indicates the free RAM which is available for the Java Virtual Machine in your BB. So these two are totally different. And according to our experience, the 50% Free RAM is very normal for a normal Blackberry user.

OK, the light bulb just went off

I have 64MB of "space". If I load 30MB of stuff/files into it, that only leaves me with 34MB of "space" left for the BB to treat as memory.

Am I getting it now?

Weird observation

I just wiped my BB. Before that, I was constantly having "memory" issues, where I would never see the BB have more than 7MB free. At times, it went to zero, which caused me many, many other problems.

Since I wiped the BB, I haven't seen it go below 23MB free (as displayed by Alt-Cap-H).

Did I have that much garbage?
Maybe there were some things laying around that were not assigned to anyone?
Any ideas why this would happen?

If you have 0.7mb of File Free, you need to get that battery out and reboot, before I come pull it out.

Gotcha.
I pulled the battery out so many times, I thought it was a feature of the BB

So, if/when this happens again, how can I find the offending memory/filespace leakers?

Amazingly, a day later, 21016160 of 60948480. That's almost 35% free

It is the RIM recommended method of dealing with it.

I wish I had a simple answer. I believe I had many problems, all (I suspect) because some stuff did not get cleaned out of my BB. I had some problems where the BB filled-up during Application-loading. In hindsight, I should not have ignored that, I should have restored it from the backup it just took. I believe this is what started my problems, and they just kept growing, but all were caused by the same thing: orphan files.

Here's another reason why I believe this. The following is a list of the AutoBackups taken:

I reset my BB on 12/18 @ 5:30p. You can see, that the backup taken before the reset was 3.5MB and the backup taken after the rest was 1MB. If I look inside both IPD files (via DM's Backup Advanced), it tells me that the Content Store was huge (and is not now). Does anyone know of a tool that will read thru the IPD files and tell me what was in the Content Store DB?
