Default Can you charge the battery off of the usb cable?

Yes, but you need to have the desktop manager software installed on the computer as well. There are specific drivers in the software that allow the device to charge off of the USB cable. Someone here may know which drivers are needed so that only those can be installed.

I dont think you need the drivers just to charge your blackberry.

Thanks all. I had it plugged in all night once and it didnt charge, But I have BDM open now and the battery bar has gone up, looks like its charging, nice if it foes all the way.

You shouldn't need the BDM open, but it does require drivers to charge.

play around with it. you know it's charging when you get the lightning bolt icon. I tried it on my PS2 and it didn't charge.

Does Windows find a driver for the BB automatically now?

Here's the scoop, without the drivers, the USB controller doesn't know the power requirements for the device, it give 100mA. With the driver it knows the power requirements for the device and gives it 500mA of power.

The answer is no, you don't need the driver, but be prepared to be charging your device for 20 hours.

Install the desktop software, it takes 5 minutes and will greatly improve the time it takes to charge the device via the USB cable.
