Question Gmail BIS

Please Login to Remove!

So I've searched around a bit on the forums and have been trying to find a definitive answer to a question of mine. Now that I have email working again I've been trying to figure out how to get Gmail to set the inbox messages as read when they are read on the device. An answer I saw to this was to use IMAP through Gmail. When you configure Gmail does it use IMAP when it autoconfigures? If so, why aren't I able to see my messages as read in my web inbox? Any help appreciated and I apologize if I just couldn't find the answer on preexisting threads.

GMail doesn't reconcile reads. In order to set up via IMAP you have to enter the email address but leave the password blank and then you can setup the imap servers. There are instructions on how to do this in your GMail server webpage. However, if you setup imap then you lose the instant email and your emails will be delayed up to 15 minutes just as standard BIS email. I don't recommend IMAP for gmail setup at this time.

Thanks for the quick answer. So either BIS or Gmail doesn't support IMAP IDLE I take it?

Not really, no. I'm happy to have the instant pop and live without read reconciles. It will reconcile deletes both ways but is a little slow to delete from the device when deleting from the server.

You can have it mark messages read if you read it and also have it set to archive the messages if you delete them from the blackberry. The link is how to setup your gmail as IMAP client that allows for it. I have been using G-Mail on my phone for over a month and it works great.

It does work but it's slow and inconsistent, I found. Glad it's working for you, though.

So, wait a minute here. Am I hearing you correctly? Are you saying that setting up Gmail with POP gives you everything that setting up Gmail with IMAP gives you, except for the emails are received instantly?

What about the speed of syncs. I know you said that if you delete an email from the computer, that it takes a while to remove it from the BB. That's the same thing with the IMAP setup. What about the other way around? How long does it take to delete the email from your computer when you delete it from your BB? With IMAP, that part of the sync is instant.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

With POP I get instant emails and reconciling of deletes. If I delete on the handheld the mail is deleted on the server almost as quick. If I delete on the server it can take an hour or so. I get NO reconciliation of reads in either direction. Also I don't get any sync of sent mail.

I've read this a few times, but I don't get Gmail any faster using POP than when using IMAP.

Pop is near instant. When I set mine up IMAP I had up to 15 minute delays. YMMV.

Is there any news about imap support and the bis upgrade?

Best,

Are you using a regular gmail account (user@gmail.com), or a Google Apps for Your Domain (gafyd) account?

I tried disabling IMAP on my gafyd account to force POP, and POP is definitely doing the 15 minute polling thing. IMAP is not consistent, but it's faster overall.

Yahoo tends to work well. Though, some and not all of us, sometimes have to deactivate and reactivate our accounts to get it back into sync.

That's not good. Sort of takes the luster away from instant email. With IMAP, it syncs sent mail and it also will mark an item as read if it is read on the BB. Besides, I do sometimes get instant email with IMAP. It's just that it might take up to 15 minutes. Far from perfect, but much better overall than the POP solution right now.

RIM and Google just need to fix it completely once and for all by supporting IMAP IDLE. This isn't rocket science.
