Default How to upgrade to 3.7.1.115 from .41 and back?

Please Login to Remove!

My company gave me a new BB 6230 three weeks ago. (T-Mobile, no voice.) The Intellisync kept prompting me to upgrade so, with the consent of an IT administrator, I did. I now have v3.7.1.41 (platform 1.6.1.41), and the Desktop Manager remains the same at 3.6.0.54. (Apparently, I had 3.7.0 before.) There's a new problem after the upgrade: now, in month view in Calendar, many appointments do NOT show a mark. This apparently is a known bug in 3.7.1.41. Many threads suggest fixing this by upgrading both DM and HH to 4.0, but I'll need our IT team to do it, as I'm not an "administrator" on my office PC. Unfortunately, they're not planning to roll out 4.0 for some time. But a different thread recommended that I upgrade myself to HH 3.7.1.115 to solve the problem. QUESTIONS:

(a) Where can I find HH 3.7.1.115?
(b) How do I install it, especially if the only source is a different carrier and not my T-Mobile?
(c) If it doesn't work and my BB is dead, how do I go back to 3.7.1.41?
(d) Before I start, should I save backup copies of RIM folders now on my hard drive? Which ones?

Thanks! glnz

>>"(a) Where can I find HH 3.7.1.115?"

www.BerryFAQ.com points to a "BlackBerry OS Upgrade FAQ" which lists all the download locations of all carriers. Version 3.7.1.115 is available with Cingualr

>>"(b) How do I install it, especially if the only source is a different carrier and not my T-Mobile?"

Follow the instructions for removing the VENDOR.XML file and it will install normally. All North American carriers generally have identical BlackBerryOS for the exact same version. This is true for the 3.7.1.115 version.

>>"(c) If it doesn't work and my BB is dead, how do I go back to 3.7.1.41?"

Follow the "BlackBerryOS Downgrade" instructions in that document referred above through BerryFAQ. Fortunately, I've never heard of a botched upgrade to 3.7.1.115 which is good. You can install the 3.7.1.41 that is available through Intellisync.

>>"(d) Before I start, should I save backup copies of RIM folders now on my hard drive? Which ones?"

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion
(And if you want to be complete, backup your Microsoft Outlook .pst storage too)

Default Installing 3.7.1.115 for idiots

Thanks for info!! Dumb question about installing the 3.7.1.115: I presume I download a file or zip. Is there a particular place on my hard drive to put it (or to extract the zip)? After I delete the existing vendor.xml, what do I do? Do I "open" a new .exe file from the 115 download, or do I look for 3.7.1.115 in Desktop Manager Application Loader? Please feel free to add other steps. Thanks again.

It's an .exe file. Just run it and it will install everything where it needs to be.

I checked the Cingular download choices, and they have 3.7.1.115 for a 6280 and a 7230. My BB is a 6230. Which Cingular version of 3.7.1.115 should I download? Thanks again. glnz

Default Well, it's certainly not a 7230

Download the 6280 code and install it. Make sure to delete "Vendor.XML" on your C: drive before starting Desktop Manager. Then start DM and it should see the new firmware.

FYI, any 6210, 6230 or 6280 code will work with each other.

Dear NJBB and bfrye: Many thanks for your info. I downloaded the Cingular version of 3.7.1.115 last night on my home PC just to look at the file, and its Properties actually say its good for both 6230 and 6280. But the download was over 11MB - does that look right to you? (I won't run it at home because I don't have DM at home - I just wanted to check it before asking my IT folks to download it on my office PC.)

That sounds right. Most of them are larger than that though.

OK - Just to understand the procedure - please correct any errors:
First, disconnect my BB from the UBS connection to my PC and turn it off.
Second, turn DM off.
Third, make backup copies of the two RIM folders listed above by Mark (and maybe my Outlook .pst).
Fourth, go back to the original RIM folders and delete the existing Vendor.xml file (or relabel it as "Oldvendor.old")
Fifth, download the Cingular file for 3.7.1.115 (which is a large .exe file) anywhere on my PC.
Sixth, run the new .exe.
Seventh, look for and delete the new Vendor.xml file??
Eighth, Start - Programs - Blackberry - turn on DM.
Ninth, plug my BB into the UBS cable.
Tenth, I'm not sure, maybe have a Scotch.
Is this correct?
Thanks for your patience.

Pretty much, it should ask if you want to downgrade your version of desktop tools after you plug the device in (with it turned on). Just say yes at this point and let apploader do it's job.

bfrye: Downgrade? Since my starting point is 3.7.1.41, isn't going to 3.7.1.115 an upgrade? And change my "Ninth" to "turn on my BB, then plug it into the UBS cable"?

Or upgrade, it will tell you newer software is available then. Sorry for the confusion

As far as turning on/off the device, there's really no need to turn it off in the first place.

So far, the procedure looks correct. The weak link would be the VENDOR.XML file, so that's the most important item to remember now -- so make sure to follow that step 7.

I helped someone with a similiar 3.7 problem, and the 3.7.1.115 upgrade solved his problems. So it's not an unproven procedure...

Mark: Thanks for confirming importance of step 7. Should I skip my step 4?

You can skip step 4 if you like.

It shouldn't matter either way (Step 4 is harmeless but optional), but Step 7 is the most important one to follow.

Missing step 7 won't cause the universe to destroy itself, it will just simply result in a failure for BlackBerry Desktop to "see" the new OS upgrade. So if Step 8 results in a dead end, doublecheck to make sure you successfully did steps 6 and then 7.

Mark and bfrye: With the help of an IT administrator to run the Cingular .exe file on my office PC, and my doublechecking that vendor.xml was renamed, your suggestions seem to have worked! I have little hyphens again in my Calendar month view! Many thanks!
