I just caught the 8707g on engadget and I was wondering what the main differences between the 2 models? and what is UMTS?

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third-generation (3G) mobile phone technologies. It uses W-CDMA as the underlying standard, is standardized by the 3GPP, and is the European answer to the ITU IMT-2000 requirements for 3G Cellular radio systems.

The last 2 digits in a model repersents the type of network so this makes sense

The 8700 uses the Intel XScalexxx174; PXA901 312 Mhz processor, while the 8707 uses a Qualcomm 6250 chipset.

I think the Qualcomm one is a slower one, too. One site on the intarwab said 146 MHz.


As well as the 8707g having 2100mhz UMTS for 3G speeds and the 8700g does not.

UMTS is faster than EDGE, using a different technology (W-CDMA) that is the "upgrade" of GSM.

with that said, UMTS is also less available in North America than EDGE. EDGE has almost a 100% coverage of all GPRS-enabled towers. UMTS is operating by Cingular and Rogers in most major markets, although nowhere really outside of those areas.

Here's a good difference between UMTS and GSM/EDGE...Simultaneous voice and data. You can be on the phone with someone, put them on speaker, type out an email to them, they get the email while you are still on the phone!

GSM is voice or data. Not both at once. So if you send an email while on the phone, it won't get sent till after you're done your call.

I love that feature of UMTS.

I believe it's about the equivalent. EDGE is actually 2.5G, so not quite 3G like EVDO and UMTS.

Technically, EDGE is the upgrade to GPRS. UMTS and HSDPA are CDMA based technologies which don't really have any links back to GSM/GPRS other than they can use the SIM for network authentication. Upgrading from GPRS to EDGE is pretty much swapping out a few cards in a rack inside the cell tower. UMTS and HSDPA require separate hardware and different antennas because they run on 2100MHz vs 1900 or 850 like Cingular's EDGE network.

My boss claimed he talked on his 7250 while VPN'd in at work but I wonder if it just paused the connection?

This is a "technically yes, but currently no" answer.

From Wikipedia "While possible in a CDMA deployment, no operator or phone manufacturer has introduced a phone with the required chipset(s) to demodulate both the cdma2000 voice and 1xEV-DO channel."

And another interesting find at Wikipedia is the generation versions for each technology...
EDGE = 2.75 G <- theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s
EV-DO = 3G <- Max 3Mbit speeds with newest rev
UMTS = 3G <- up to 1920 kbit/s but it think that may be wrong.
HSDPA = 3.5G <- This get's up to 14.4Mbit/s xfer rates.

EV-DV was supposed to have been the simultaneous voice/data evolution for CDMA. EV-DO does stand for 'data only' in some circles.
