I am getting ready to update a 7100G (Cingular) and the person has a boat load of contacts on his SIM card. I am figuring that since his contacts are there, the firm ware update will not nuke is contacts on the SIM. I hope? Any ideas?

If the contacts are truely on his SIM card, then nothing the BlackBerry does should have any effect on them.

I do believe that they are, as he has to choose the SIM option to get to that contact list.
