Default should I get a BB? how to use my current IMAP email

Please Login to Remove!

hi guys,
sorry if this is not the right forum to post this Q.

I am thinking of either getting an iphone or a BB (prefer BB since people tell me it's the best for email.)
However, the way it works on an iphone is the way I like it: you use mail.app on the phone to check any mailacount you want (as long as it's IMAP). So you have ALL of your folders and messages there, and any changes will be reflected on webmail of your desktop mail application. I'm not interested in push, because I don't mind checking my email every hour or so.
So I tried to find out how it works on BB. And I couldn't find it. All I can find is stuff about push and a BB email account etc. The guy at the store didn't know either. He thought I had to email via a BB account.

Any advise?

Thanks a lot!

First, welcome to the BBforums.

BB email is "Push" technology... all of it. You can not set your BB to "go" and get your mail at certain times or on the fly as you desire. It is pushed to the device as it is detected on your server.

You have to have a BIS account. You integrate email accounts with BIS. From what I understand, however, BIS doesn't fully support IMAP. I don't use IMAP though and can't really comment any further...

If you have either a Yahoo, AOL, or Live account then congrats, it will be pushed IMAP style (IMAP idle I believe). If you have a Gmail or any other IMAP account, it will poll as per the link JSanders posted above.

I am using Gmail IMAP just FYI.

On a related note, Apple's MobileMe/.Mac is now instant push. I've been using a Nokia E71 while I wait for the Bold and email arrives instantly! I've been agitating for this from Apple for years and it's finally here! Back when I had T-Mobile service my .Mac email came every 15 minutes, when the RIM servers polled my account on .Mac. Has anybody set up .Mac email on a Blackberry recently? Or used it recently? I'm wondering if it works instantly on a BB like it does on my Nokia. On both a Treo 680 (Palm OS) or Treo 750 (Windows Mobile 6.0) it's still on the phone's email client schedule.

OK thanks for the answers. So maybe an iphone would be better for me. I have this small independent email provider (not AOL, yahoo etc) and I just want to be able to check my email when I am commuting, sort my stuff out, archive messages etc. Basically, I need a super mini laptop that runs mail.app (or any other general email program).
Cheers,
F

I got my .Mac mail fine on my Blackberry, but it just wasn't instantly pushed to me. Maybe it would be now, but I don't have a Blackberry so I can't tell.
