I think orginally there were no seperate forums for each series BlackBerry. When the 8700 and 7100 series were first introduced the created seperate forums for them. I wxpect this to continue when additional new series are released. I don't expect new forums for old models to be added. The 7200 series is on its last leg as a supported platform from RIM anyway. It is being phased out, so as time goes on, less and less people will be using it.

Yea i just bought a 7280 off of eBay for 82.99 all together and its in really nice condition so I think I'll wait to upgrade 'till later on in the 8700's life.

Why? Name one business advantage of the 71xx/87xx over the 72xx.

My 7250 works well for email, contacts, calendar, browsing, instant messaging, tethering (at EvDO speeds, no less) ... A faster, prettier, model would be nice but this one certainly fills the role for which it was developed.

Well you can get a 72X0 off of eBay for about 100 dollors. For somone who needs one for their small/new buisiness but is tight for money its perfect.

If they have Cingular the BB plan is only 29.99$ it's a great deal for a small/new buisiness.

Huge corporations need blackberries like 8700g becuase of all their features but I can't stress enough how good a 72X0 is for small/new buisiness.

Which features of the 87xx models are both mission critical for larger size businesses and not available in the 72xx series?

Ok I worded that badly. It's not that there is something missing. I myself have a 7280. But the fact that 72X0 are relativley(sp) cheap, expecially used make it a worthwhile purchase for someone not wanting to spend money.

But I never intended it to go this far. So maybe we should stop? Unless your having fun discussing, I'm fine with that.

Oh, it's all in good fun ... to argue the counterpoint, the larger memory capacity of the 87xx series would allow for a greater number, and for more complex, third party applications to be loaded and run on the device. The faster processing speed does improve the performance of the device in data intensive tasks. The larger, higher resolution display makes graphically complex applications more practical (VNC, etc.) ... so for power users there is real value to moving to the newer devices.

But I still say, the 72xx is far from obsolete.

As a small consolation prize see my tips doc for the 72XX series. I had a 7280 and loved it till the 8700 came. Note that it may not have all the software discussion for OS higher than 3.7. I think it was on the verge of 4.0 when I last updated it.

Sounds like my mom telling me not to buy a Z06 and that a Toyota Corolla would serve the needs of getting me from school to work, and to the beach as automobiles fill the role of transportation for which they were developed.

The 8700 and 7130 series GSM/EDGE handhelds save money for IT Help Desk and Tech Services groups due to the faster processor and additional memory. Don't believe me? One of the most common troubleshooting techniques established within the BlackBerry community is 'if basic troubleshooting does not fix the issue, do a security wipe.' This takes roughly 5-45 minutes on the 72xx and 710x series handhelds (usually 10-20 minutes has been my average). For Joe User who can put the phone down and go grab a bite to eat, it may not seem like that long of a period of time, however in the world of IT support services, that is an extremely ROI and definitely an easy incentive to upgrade, in my opinion.

P.S. - The General Forum (the very first one available here, pre-Charm/7100 handhelds) has long-since been established as the forum for 72xx/75xx and prior handhelds. Keep in mind that this website and forum were started months before the 7100-series RUMORS even started trickling down. Hell, I had a 6710 when I joined the forum initially. At that time, the basic functionality of BlackBerry technology were split into 3 categories - pager, black & white and color (7230 was the newest model, if I remember correctly). The 7100 was rumored as an upcoming release and thus the first handheld-specific sub-forum was created (entitled General Charm Discussion).
