You need to download the OS from your carrier and then install it to your PC. You skipped that step.

The disk that comes with the phone is Desktop Manager (DM). BUT you also need to install the actual Operating System (OS) for your particular phone. They are TWO SEPARATE software installs. The numbers add to the confusion since the DM version number and the OS version numbers are in some cases very similar.

The OS can be found on your carrier's website for BB or maybe even the BB website.

When you get the phone OS, you install that to your computer. It then creates the files and folders referenced in this very long thread. Then you go about doing what is referenced in the first message. (not that I have done it).

And that is all very clearly outlined in the first post.

First off, thank you for the detailed instructions, John! I read through all of the pages in this thread and didn't see this question asked, so: After I've deleted all of the preloaded pictures, is there any way to delete the now-empty "Preloaded Pictures" folder in my Media section? TIA.

Welcome to the forums!

I believe that if you do this after the OS is already loaded to the device that the folder and maybe even the thumbnails will still show on the device. However, if you reload the OS from scratch and go through these steps before loading the OS then the thumbnails will disappear. The Preloaded Pictures folder will still be there no matter what but it should be empty.

No problem. The pictures are gone but the empty folder remains.

One more quick question, if you delete the voice dialing and then you choose to use it in the future, is there anyway you can get it back?

Just move the VAD files back into the Java folder and rerun the Application Loader.

Yep. This works for any app that you move into the Removed Modules folder. You can always move it back and then rerun the apploader to put it back on the device.

Ive done this twice, but I just upgraded the OS in a last ditch effort to fix this resetting problem.

I know what themes I want and dont feel like taking the time to delete all the _vendorID="xxx" files to open up all the themes available. I'll end up just deleting them all anyway. My question is can I skip this step or is it a part of the process to make it all work? I dont want to mess it up.

You can just remove the vendor tags for the themes you want, if you like.

It sounds like you attempted to download and install Desktop Manager again. You need to download and install the Handheld Operating System file in ADDITION to the Desktop Manager software.

I'll say it again. DO NOT download Desktop Manager 4.3 again. You are getting nowhere. You need the handheld OS. Until you download and install that you won't be able to do this. When you get to your carrier's download area, be sure and select your device model in the list to download the OS.

If you have OS 4.2 or later on your 8707 then make sure you are running Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 or later. Plug in the device and run Desktop manager / Media Manager. In the lower right corner you should be able to select your device memory. Just move the file from the top to the bottom to transfer the file. It's fairly intuitive.
