What is the point in PIN messaging?
Please Login to Remove!
Just wondering what it is and what the point is? We have our phone number to SMS to and email address to email to. Why is a third option even needed? Just wondering since so mny people include their PIN in the signature on this site.

pin is direct messages. does not charge from sms or email. Plus, you have confirmation that it was delivered

So then are you able to PIN message people with blackberry's that do not have data plans? And with the balckberry's that do have data plans don't all them include unlimited SMS and Email?

It is possible to get confirmation of SMS delivery as well. Go to Options > SMS > Delivery Reports > On. |

No data plan - no PIN messaging.
PIN to PIN works even if the underlying e-mail system is down. Great for disaster scenarios. Use it all the time.
SMS doesn't always work well across networks. PIN to PIN works from any BB - even the really old data only BBs - to any BlackBerry.

No data plan = no PIN messaging (among other things). Yes most data plans come with SMS and email, but not always unlimited. |

Sometimes I just wish RIM could keep stuff the same across the board. BB OS 4.0 seemed much more similiar across all the models. Maybe its just me.

One other benefit(?) is its a Level 1 message. And you can set a different tone for Level 1 messages.

Is blackberry the only cell maker that has PIN? If it works when other services do not it would be nice to have across the board.

It is a BlackBerry only phenomena. From the very first BBs (850/950 pager size) on up, they support Pin to Pin and only BBs support it.

I use PIN to PIN a lot, too. Especially with BB Messenger. Also very nice troubleshooting tool if you support others. When someone calls and tells me they are not able to send/receive email, the first thing I do is send them a PIN message.

I love the PIN function. It is the main reason I would never consider moving to a treo, etc.
It's especially useful in a workgroup where many members have blackberries. very intuitive way of messaging.

Yes, BBmessenger is apparrently not email aware and only uses PIN. That is why I like it.

I don't have the delivery reports option on my 8700c either.
The lack of delivery reports is why my partner and I PIN each other instead of using SMS. Additionally, as was mentioned above SMS is quite often something that you have to add-on to your plan at added cost.
With PIN messages you can actually see the delivery confirmation within the Messages app. A small D appears over the check mark icon (that you get with all sent messages). I'm guessing that SMS delivery confirmations probably work the same way but I've never been able to use them.
Anyway, in our experience there were just too many times SMS messages were just never delivered. There were also many times when an SMS would arrive very very late.
At work we use PIN's as a backup to email. If your Exchange server is down PIN messages are a very useful backup.

Tmob does not include sms in their data package. In fact, they wrote their messaging app (ICQ/AIM/YM/MSN?) to run via sms, and NOT over the data network, so that any usage comes in as sms charges. They charge extra $14/mo for unlimited sms. Kinda stupid that you can download a free program like Ramble from a 3rd party and get no-charge AIM messaging, but the program from your provider is set up to charge $.05/message. My friend found out the hard way when he had $80 in text messages on his bill.
So, as others have said, I like it because it's free, fast, no SMS addon needed, delivery confirmation, and pins can be long (SMS has limitations).
Add in the blackberry messenger (PIN based), and you can now have real-time group conversations (not possible in SMS or email). And after I'm done with a BB messenger conversation, I can select the whole thing and save it - it's not in 40 different pieces like emails (or even regular pins) would be.

Let me tell you that in my country (Mexico) you need to pay USD$ 0.09 each SMS message or contract an unlimited plan for around USD$ 10.00 a month.
Cost may be was not the reason to use PIN but every SMS message is limited to 160 characters and PIN is around 800 characters.  |
