Why won't Nextel offer a new Blackberry?
Please Login to Remove!
I have had a Blackberry 7100i for about two years now, on the Nextel network.
It is a nice piece of equipment, but I do not understand why every other service provider has all of the new Blackberry equipment, and Nextel does not plan to offer a new one anytime soon.
I have talked to whoever answers the phone with Nextel, and they all say they have not received any notifications of new blackberrys coming out anytime soon for Nextel.
Does anyone know anything on this matter?
Thanks,
Dan

Nextel is a dying carrier. In my opinion, they're already dead.
You won't see any new BlackBerry devices for Nextel.
It's time for you to switch to a new carrier if you need a newer device.

Not enough people worldwide use the iDEN network. Its not worth RIM time and money to develop a new iDEN device. And Sprint is not going to subsidise the entire cost of RIM to do it.
Best hope is that you get a new Sprint BlackBerry with iDEN Direct Connect. Last time that I spoke to our Sprint reps that was all their hopes were pinned on. But thought it wouldnt happen until the end of 2008 if at all.

Is the DC that important of a feature for you??? I just recently scrapped my 7100i for a the 8830 (Now Pearl) and I'm extremely happy. Granted I do miss the MMS on the 7100i and the flawless callwaiting/confrence calling features. But like everyone has said Nextel is on it's way out, which is one of the reasons I gave up and switched.

I don't believe Nextel will ever have another Blackberry either, but I do believe Sprint will have a Blackberry with QChat push-to-talk which will talk to other Sprint QChat phones and Nextel phones on DC. It requires Rev A, but it's available most places now. I don't believe it'll be end of 2008 coming either. This is just my humble opinion and not based on anything I've seen in writing.

Sprint is already scaling down the iDEN network and trying to make it DC only. The new Nextel phones are EVDO/iDEN. Data and voice run over EVDO and DC runs over iDEN.
Telus and Sprint both have a split system so if they were willing to join forces, and split the cost they could do an iDEN/EVDO blackberry.

Other Nextel thoughts
I too have owned the 7100i for about a year and it is clear Nextel will not be incorporating anything new into their line-up/network. What other carrier offers an unlimited voice plan for $99.00? I use a lot of minutes and the Nextel service represents the best value for me.

Nextel has to step up to the plate. All nextel phones are crossing over to the sprint voice network. Sprint is all but kicking the I phones butt with its version of the touch screan. Nextel knows that its got to step up.

nextel IS sprint its no longer a seperate entity.... and you will see fewer and fewer new devices for iDen as time progresses. As to kicking the Iphone's butt, the only pda device that outsold the iphone in Q3 was the blackberry had nothing to do with sprint. as a matter of fact, most users who switching carriers to get the iphone were from sprint and tmo

The DC from nextel is used by a lot of members of the public safety proffesion. I dont know what I would do without mine. I love the blackberry w/ the DC!

I agree, I can't imagine work without the DC. What is this Qchat I hear about? Is Sprint using the Qchat already? I occasionally hear a promotion (on TV or radio) for new phones that "work on both networks". Is this the start of the merger, or is this something else?

The merger is complete. Nextels iDen walkie-talkie service on a CDMA sprint phone is the "phone that works on both networks". Qchat will be a new method to connect sprint ready-link and nextel walkie-talkie.
