From what I heard, this will be offered starting with the next version of BES. Handheld OS v4.2 or higher will also be required.

They are shooting for it to be included with the next version of BES, although I'm not sure, at this point, if it's going to make it to market in the next six months during it's launch. The upgrade process will be non-obtrusive to the device or user experience, as well as allowing you the ability to schedule the upgrades.

I was told a number of other details about the OTA OS upgrades, but not sure what I can say due to NDA. It all sounds fantastic in theory. We will just have to see how it turns out in practice.

It is supposed to be coming in BES 5.0 which won't be until the middle of next year at least.

All the smartphone are getting more and more features. Everyone expects them to work perfectly when released.

Actually at the Blackberry IT Professional Seminar in NY they were shooting for 4.1 SP4. They said OTA OS upgrades an 5x faster browsing with the SP4 for release. They also mentioned enhanced monitoring for 4.SP3. I was suprised myself to hear this good news. You would think they would save these features for their next major release 5.0 code named argon but they got other plans for that release. Of course as always all this could easily change. They could get pushed back like other features in the past.

Got some questions regarding this OTA, if anyone can answer unless BOUND to the NDA.

With this OTA:

Is it limited to BES connected users?
Is it dependant on Battery strength; as in will a 50% full battery B4 commencing OTA firmware update be limited to that 50% afterwards - even though showing FULL? SE & Nokia phones seem to have this issue.
> IS the OTA REVERSIBLE OTA; as in downgrading the the OS Firmware? this will be incredible.

Lastly & most importantly. Is this OTA going to be part of the standard OMI system that Nokia, motorola, SE, and others will be crossing over too within the next 2 years?

Thus far, it has only been mention in conjunction with BES 5.0 and enterprise software management enhancements, so I would assume that it would apply only to BES users.

To my knowledge, this will be a feature, but if battery power became an issue, the OS upgrade is staggered (meaning it won't install anything until the entire OS is on the handheld ready for installation). It's not going to affect end-user performance, so I wouldn't imagine end-user performance would affect the installation, either.

As for the last two questions, I do not believe that the former OS will remain on the handheld after an upgrade. It would seem that if you wanted to downgrade, you'd do so the same way as you upgraded, sending out the OS to the handheld. And I'm not sure on the last question.

As with all road map dates from RIM...I will believe it when I see it. I recall that 4.0 was suppose to be out the 4Q of 2004. Like all Project Managers they missed the date on that one

This is a good feature, but would be limited to the amount of free space in the handheld. Obviously with 64 megs of memory in most devices (and will only increase) they can probably offer it now..

A handy feature for IT admins.. but that's all. =)

"That's all?" are you kidding?

This is HUGE!!! If you have ever attempted an OS upgrade for 200 Blackberry devices, you would know just HOW huge.
