I didn't buy the BB from CSL because I liked the 8700c much better than what was available from CSL, even though I do receive a lot Chinese emails. Wouldn't you know it....one week after I got my 8700c, CSL Hong Kong annouced it.

So, now I need to find someway to enable my 8700c to support Chinese. After searching and reading a few posts, I still have a few questions, hope some of you experts can help me out.

1) Do I need to use the CSL setup launcher? Or do I use the original desktop software?

2) Do I need to remove vendor.XML (as was suggested by someone in another thread)?

3) Chinese support is only affected by the software version resident on 8700, and independent from the carriers? (ie. Cingular or CSL)

4) I will try to back up my 8700c before I attempt all this, but what would be the worst thing to happen if something was to go wrong? Would most of the functions be restored if I were to send a service book?

Please excuse my very basic questions as my knowledge about BB is really limited.

Appreciate any suggestions or advise in this matter.

That is correct. As far as the carrier is concerned, they're just passing along packets of data, as long as it's UTF-8, then you're all good.

The very worst case scenario is that your BB would turn into a door stop.

Completed installation of CSL's software.

Now my 8700 can read and input Chinese.

What I did:
- backup BB
- delete vendor.XLM prior to installation

What I did not: (contrary to the instructions for theme upgrades)
- change name of BlackBerry.alx to Blackberry.alx.old

Thanks to those who have posted a lot of useful information on upgrading procedures...

Thanks for the posts - followed instruction above and got Chinese and Japanese added. Tested sending and receiving on my 8700c on Cingular network - Chinese e-mail is okay except for the e-mail subject heading gets messed up when being forwarded to my BB. Don't have time to really try out Japanese yet but added just in case I have to see Japanese messages.

Hi,
when I attempted to install the HK CSL OS, I did not get an option for installing Korean language support, only Japanese and Chinese. Is there something I need to do specifically to get the korean language support option?

thanks.

I also just installed the HKCSL OS on my T-Mobile 8700g. I can read and write emails in Chinese alright - it's very nice. However, I can't send SMS in Chinese. I had a friend send me a Chinese SMS from her mobile. I can read most of my friend's message except one of the characters is a blackbox. What do I need to do to be able to send and read Chinese SMS? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
