I have an icon on my home screen (where new sms/emails) are displayed.

Its a picture of a globe with a 1 next to it...

What is it, and how can I remove it?

It is a Browser message, usually indicates a new message from a push service. I believe the message shows in the regular messages list.

like jeremyckitching mentioned its a browser message, if it doesnt show under the messages folder, click the trackball and then go to view folders. In the list of folders check under browser messages or wap push messages. it will be listed there, once you read it. it will be mark as read.
