It doesn't need it unless you have 500 users or so and they receive a lot of attachments. Obviously, it takes up a good deal of RAM when its converting and compressing the attachments. This process takes up more memory than any other process on the BES, if I'm not mistaken. If you don't have many users or your users do not receive many attachments, then I don't see the need for the extra memory (but memory is so cheap these days).
