Hello all.

We just got our first three 8830's in our office, and I can't get any of them to go through enterprise activation.

When I try to activate OTA, it hangs, then says the server is not responding, please contact your administrator.

When I try to activate mine by tethering via USB, it seems to activate, shows up in the BES as active, but wont' send e-mail. my calendar and contacts show up when it's tethered, but do not update wirelessly.

PIN to PIN works between two of the 8830's so I know it's not a network issue, and the other 28 blackberries are syncing with the server no problem.

We are running Server 2003 SP2, Exhcange 2007 SP1, BES 4.1.4.

Any help would be appreciated. I've been fighting with these for a few hours and I want to throw them out the window

EDIT: I should clarify that these are the first Blackberries we are trying to activate since installing the exchange Service pack, and upgrading our BES from 4.1.1(I think, may have been 4.1.0, I didn't do the upgrade myself, as I was away)

Have you got a test or admin device that is already working? If so, wipe it and try to reactivate. This will help you to determine whether there is something wrong with the batch of 8830s, or whether the server is not working properly since the upgrade.

Are you using new SIMs in the 8830s?
PIN-to-PIN messaging works with BIS plans too, so to say that PtP messaging working proves it is not a network issue is incorrect. If the SIMs are not provisioned for BES, just BIS, then P2P will work but EA won't.

I just tried activating an older 7290, and it would not activate, same issue. It appears to be all new activations, although existing users are fine.

yes, we have SIM's in all of the 8830's. They are with TELUS. Both are new plans activated yesterday.

That sounds a little odd. A fully activated device should be able to send email when connected to BES via USB, even if wireless is not working.

My test would be:

1. Get a SIM from a working device that is KNOWN good and put it in the 8830 - can you activate? If YES it is a SIM problem on the 8830 SIMs. If NO:
2. Get a known good device and SIM (i.e. something already working, hopefully a test or admin device) and wipe it. Try re-activating via EA. If it works, then the issue is with the 8830 devices. If it DOESN'T work, the issue is your post-upgrade BES.

it can send and recieve e-mail while still plugged in via USB, but not when I disconnect.

Also, while it does have a SIM, it is on the telus CDMA network right now, and shouldn't need the SIM. I thought the SIM was for when it's operating on GSM only.

BB mail operations won't run on GSM - they need GPRS or EDGE to send BB data OTA.

Have no idea what the telus CDMA network is, or whether EA would run over it. Normally for EA and/or usual BB operations, you just need a plain old GPRS or EDGE network, and a SIM with corporate BB enabled.

From a quick google, CDMA seems to be a Canadian high speed network. I would still imagine you'd need a SIM to get onto it, else anyone could use it free of charge, and I assume Telus would not want that!

CDMA is the common North American cell phone technology. of our 28 working blackberries, 24 of them run on CDMA. CDMA does not use SIM cards at all. the only reason the 8830 has a SIM card is for roaming outside of north america.

Like I said, I'm pretty confident it is not a network issue. The data portion is working, as I can use the web on the devices, as well as send messages PIN to PIN.

I think that it is an issue with our upgrades to Exchange SP1 and BES 4.1.4. I'm just not sure what it could be at this point.

Jadey, CDMA networks are in America as well. Verizon and Sprint use the CDMA network. The do not use SIM cards like the GSM networks.

Thanks, all new to me. We only just got EDGE on 1 out of 4 major UK netowrks (hello iPhone!)

We always get everything last. At a marked up price. Bah, moan (and now I will be quiet and revert to a stiff upper lip).

Thanks. Out of interest - how do they govern access to the networks then? Do they allow MAC addresses or do you have to authenticate, or...?

The phones are activated in store when you buy them. they input some kind of activation code for that phone, then the phone number desired, then it activates.

This means that it's a bit harder to switch phones on CDMA, and unlocked phones are pretty much non existent.

Your EA wasnt good, what if you wipe the handheld, purge pending messages from BES and then reprovision.

There are no pending messages in the BES, and wiping the device did not help.
