I'm looking for a theme that will show memory/space utilization and even better, do something about it - let's say change the background color from green (>75% free) to yellow (<75% & >25%) to red (<25% free).

It's not possible, there is no interface with the memory usage in themes

I understand now, that this is beyond a Theme's capabilities.
... any idea where I can read about what a Theme can do?
