getting the 8300 tomorrow, and im wondering what all these pins are about, and what is bb messenger, is it free?
someone wrote this:
he reason all my friends and I are obsessed with BB is Blackberry Messenger (BBM), which we are on all day with... always bbm-ing people, sending photos, voice notes, etc. The reason it's different than other SMS services, is that it's direct BB to BB, it's not something you pay for, it works world wide (my friends and I in Miami will be BBing other friends in Dubai, London, Sydney) and it is instant and global.
please explain?! totally new to this whole blackberry experience...
BlackBerry Messenger is an application that sends PIN messages (messages to a specific PIN number, unique to every BlackBerry) with an IM client feel to it. You can also send files via PIN or BBM, and it is free to use, but will only work with a BlackBerry data plan.
BlackBerry Messenger provides BlackBerry® users with the familiar look-and-feel of desktop instant messaging programs, right on their BlackBerry device.
Use BlackBerry Messenger to chat with other BlackBerry device users in an easy-to-use instant messaging format. It is designed to support group-chat, provide you with the availability status of your contacts and track message delivery status.
If you already use Personal Identification Number ("PIN") messaging on your BlackBerry device, you'll love how this new application expands on that functionality and makes it even easier.

I read all the posts about how to get full functionality out of the BB w/o the data plan and it seemed like too much work for the cost of the thing. For $30 a month, it's not worth the hassle of trying to beat the system unless you're really REALLY into that kind of stuff. Hey Zerog46, how many individual pics make up that cool avatar? AG

Also remember if you don't get an unlimited data plan or you are BB Messaging someone who doesn't have an unlimited data plan...there is a chance you could go over your data usage amount and start paying extra...so BB Messenage is totally 100% free in some cases. (I'm not too sure why someone wouldn't get an unlimited data plan with a BB but that is just my opinion!)
ends up i do have a data plan..well it's included in my credit. i am on the $79 cap which = $550 credit a month plus 100 free texts, data is $1 (australian) for 5 minutes, so i will stick with that, otherwise buy a data bundle.

Unfortunately BBM will not work with a generic data plan, it has to a a BlackBerry data plan.
