Default Not always receiving calls over UMA

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

Just wanted your opinion on this, at home my BB is on the Wi-Fi network, top left says UMA etc however when it is on UMA some people are having to call my housemate to ask him if my phones on as it keeps going through to voicemail. We tested it with his phone calling me and it went to voicemail however restarting the wireless on my BB fixed it. Would you have thought this is likely a software glitch or the sign of a faulty Wi-Fi card?

Thanks for any ideas, obviously really need to get this sorted,

Dan

This happens to me periodically and then it will magically fix itself a few days later with no effort on my part. I spoke with T-mobile CC about it and because I can't duplicate the problem at a T-mobile hot spot (as if I'm going to camp out at Starbucks for a week), they assume it is my router. I explained to them it works when it works and I never make any changes to my router when it suddenly stops working. But since it's not a consistent problem I can't get any help with it. I got one rep to go so far as to admit it could be a hardware issue, but again since I couldn't duplicate the problem at a hot spot nothing came of it.

The only suggestion I could give is if you could come up with an elimination process. Bring your 8320 out to a different network, if it works there then the issue is with your router at home. If it doesn't then it could be your HH.

If you are using a Linksys router, you can read up some info on this thread: http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi...s-linksys.html
Or visit this section over at the FAQ: Linksys Router Tips - BlackBerryFAQ

Or you can also go to the WiFi Hotzone Forum as there are lots of other Orange UK users there who are exchanging info about UMA issues.

Good luck!

All my settings already matched the suggestions in your first URL except the channel which was 11. My phone refused to recognize the router on channel 3, but works on channel 2. We'll see how that goes, although UMA has been working well for the past few days anyway. Murphy's law, I suppose!

jenfavre, that seems to be the exact same for me, it's intermittent making it such a pain to diagnose but it has done it on more than one wireless network so I am more inclined to think it's the phone.

Default Internet Connection Quality

Assuming the phone and router are working OK, has anyone factored Internet connection quality into the equation? I have had the same, apparently random, loss of UMA although the connection to my router is strong (TMo D-link).

Spoke with a TMo/RIM CSR a couple of weeks ago and he directed me to the following site to test speed, jitter, and signal quality, which he said affect the UMA connection:
MySpeed VoIP quality test, test VoIP connection quality
(It looks like you can perform about 10 tests before you're blocked for a certain period of time.)

As it turns out, I get poor signal quality to the Chicago location (which is closest to me) but strong signal quality to the other sites.

Just thinking out loud here, but one hypothesis could be that bad UMA connections result from connecting to an UMA service server along a route with poor signal quality. A battery pull could cause the BB to connect through a different server and restore the connection. Likewise, there may be other triggers (web browsing, finishing a call, etc.) that will cause a BB with a working UMA connection to connect to a different server and/or through a route with poor signal quality.

Any thoughts?
