Unhappy BB Equipment Failures

Please Login to Remove!

I have a 4.0 BES with about 250 users. Has anyone that has this many users had to replace a lot of Blackberrys? We use mostly Cingular 7290's and Nextel 7520's all running the latest handheld software. I have probably had to replace over 50 units within the last 4-6 months. The errors are all over the place. Some are java runtime errors. Others just come up saying "failed, type "s"t"a"r"t". You do this and just reboots up to the same screen. On my Nextels, alot of them will just not turn on the radio. They will be working fine and then just switch to "x" by the antenna and then not come back up. I have tried master resets, battery pulls, every trick I can think of. No luck. Just curious if anyone else has seen this sort of problem.

Thanks

you tried complete handheld wipes? I am starting to see a few java errors as well over past week I am sure it has to do with installing and uninstalling programs on my end

Thanks for the response.
On the ones that would come up, I have tried complete wipes, but that does not seem to rectify the problems. Most of the time, once I get these errors, the handheld is pretty much dead and I cannot access anything on it. I do not that a lot of these are from my end users who install a lot of different apps. I am sure that may have something to do with it.

Yes I have had the same problem!! I have a nextel 7520 Radio went dead on it and on top of that it will not charge the battery now. But on top of everything else I have to tak eit to a service center to ship it back which the closest one is an HOUR away, I've been out of a phone for 4 or 5 days, I have to pay 35 more dollars just to ship it to have it fixed, and its only a month and a half old. I pay all this money way over a hundred a month for service and then they tell me i have to pay 35 dollars plus drive an hour to have it fixed its a bunch of crap. Its making think twice about using blackberry or nextel. And I checked on here to see if I could find a fix I've reloaded the software 3 or 4 times, still wont charge and the radio wont come back up, I get no signal just an X.

I'm not sure why you'd have to pay $35. It should be fixed under warranty; I don't think it should require an NSP service, but maybe I'm missing something. I'd pressure them to give you a new one on the spot and I'd be fairly forceful in getting the $35 waived.

We have over 400 devices and I had over 400 at a previous job and had a few bad ones but nothing like you have described. When Dawg says wipe, I'm sure he is meaning using javaloader to wipe the device totally clean. Is that what you have done because that will do wonders fixing java errors because java errors typicaly have nothing to do with HArdware.

Well the nextel stores here say I have to pay $35 dollars to have it shipped overnight to my house. Otherwise I have to go pick it up or something I dont know. I got it waived anyway because I took it up there this place an hour away and they forgot to ship it out. So I talk to the regional manager she ripped them a new one overnighted me a new one and waived the fee. ;) Because when I went there originally they acted like they didnt know anything about BB's or how to send them back and it was really annoying. So I talk to there service manager and she got all over them and told them she gave them instructions because they already knew I was coming. Anyway got me a new one now seems to be working fine.

With that many devices you should not be dealing with retail outlets. You should be working with a coporate account executive who should take care of these problems for you and your company.

we have a corporate plan with our provider and they all get replaced. at first it was taking ages to get replaced but now it is much faster.

all the same problems as you and about just as many over about a year.

I have over 1000 users on my 4.0 BES, mixture of 7230, 7290, 7250 and 7750. We have shied away from Nextel because of radio issues, and we have not had many JAVA errors like you are having. Have you tried to nuke the device and then re-load the 4.0 Handheld Software? That usually works for me. Where are you getting the handheld software from?

Guess thats why Java uses a Coffee cup as their logo...it's so slow or breaks, go have a coffee!

Sad....really. I thought there was hope for Java.

I have 600+ users spread across 3 servers, 2.2 for domino, 4.0 for domino, and 3.6 for exchange. Mixture of devices from 5820 thru 7290. Worst seemed to be 7730 running 3.6 code. have seen a few issues with 7290 running 4.0.185 but nothing as bad as you describe. All have been fixed by a javaloader wipe which is now our standard fix and should be recommended to everyone. hardware faults are now down to about 3%.

I had that exact issue a moment ago after updating the handheld software - the radio was reprovisioning with Nextel. After a few minutes leaving it alone (while searching here with an increasing sense of alarm and saying a few choice words), I noticed it sending and receiving data.

I got a message from Nextel saying the unit had been registered, and all is well.

We recently purchased 60 new 7520's to upgrade users and had the same issues with the X appearing after a signal is grabbed. You have to call nextel and have them refresh all of the device settings in their system and then perform a master radio reset and re-register on the RIM network. I had to do this with most of the 60 units.
