Blackberry 7100g vs. Palm One Treo 650
Please Login to Remove!
Hi All,
My friend is interested in buying BB 7100g or the Palm Treo. He asked my help but I haven't used the Palm. I noticed in previous threads many of you have different types of devices along with the BB and was wondering if you could give pros and cons of each.
Thanks!

In other words... you have a 7100g... and you can't figure out how to use it... so you're thinking of switching to a Treo 650... and you made up some story about your friend so we wouldn't think you were a dumbass?

As to having a 7100g, you are correct. I do have one and frankly wouldn't trade it for the world. As to switching to a Treo 650, never. Can't justify spending over $400 for a phone which I think is inferior to the BB and has features I really don't care for.

I don't have a Treo 650, but I just moved from a Treo 600 to a 7100t. The BB is slightly more sleek and certainly more lightweight, and I like the fact that I can do everything without a stylus. On the other hand, the Treo's touch screen is a nice feature. The wealth of Palm software is an advantage of the Treo, as is the ability to take pictures and listen to music. I don't really need any of this stuff, however, which is part of the reason I switched.
Concerning email, the BB has the definite advantage. If you have a Treo and a GPRS data plan, you can set the Treo to automatically check your email at certain intervals, but as soon as you're out of GPRS range you're out of luck. The BB is just more tailor-made for emailing. That being said, I much prefer SMSing on the Treo, whose built in messaging app is very well designed and user-friendly. The BB lumps all incoming and outgoing SMSs and emails in the same mailbox, making it confusing sometimes. The Treo's full QWERTY keyboard is pretty nice, but I find typing on the 7100, once you get used to it, almost easier.
If your friend is a Mac user, then he should be aware that he'll have to purchase PocketMac software for syncing and he won't be able to install any software on the BB without using a PC. Even Virtual PC won't work. The Treo works much better with Mac.
I can't think of anything else right now. I've only had my BB for a week, so I'm no expert, but I hope this helps.

I agree with disconneckt, the blackberry is made for the push email technology, while the treo is more feature rich with alot more apps for you to choose from. I dont care much for the treo since I could never get used to the keyboard and I just hate that little stub at the top. So if your depending mainly on e-mail, go with the blackberry, or just go with the blackberry anyways ;)

Wirelessly posted (My sword: BlackBerry7100/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)
As penguin said.. I'm guilty of what you said. ;) I went to buy a phone one day. And I came out with a powerful tool. Yes the bb can be a pain to set up but when its correct viola....!!!!!!!! I always buy on impulse... But that's the fun way, no? Anyways I believe my home. Is at 7290 avenue, ya dig.. Unfortunately my impulse led me to a 7100g... So. If there is a 7290 that needs a place to stay, I have a 7100g for ya .....come home..!! Tathepilot@gmail.com

If you want to listen to MP3 on a device that does it not quite as good as a ipod, etc, get the Treo.
If you want to use a low res camera on your phone, get a Treo.
If you want to connect to a bluetooth GPS with mapping get a Treo.
If you need your e-mail solution to just work, get the BB.
If places you go have security policies that disallow camera phones, get the BB.
If random phone resets cause you to get very annoyed, get the BB.
If you roam internationally and use data, get the BB and you will save about half the data roaming charges.
The 7100 is a bit more discreet than the Treo - ie it looks more like a phone.
There was a comment above about the 7100 being lighter than the Treo 600. True, but the 650 is lighter than the 600.
The Treo has more software, the BB has less but can use java applications made for other phones.
I had a Treo 600 and was thinking about moving to a 650. However the 7100 caused me to drop the Treo. My main reason was having to leave my Treo with the guard at a lot of the companies I visit. The added stability and the reduction in roaming data were pleasant surprises.

In all fairness, I must say that my Treo 600 never reset itself and rarely crashed. I can't speak for the 650.

I own both. I go back and forth and always end up back to the 7100g. To be honest, I like both. They both have there positives. I travel alot and find features about both very useful. If email is the defacto reason you need a smartphone, then the 7100g is the way to go. The BB push email just rocks. If you are looking for a device that has more options on applications (mp3 player, etc.), then the Treo 650 will serve well. Now the down side to the Treo 650 is stability. Granted, it has gotten better over the last few months with the releases of carrier patches. The 7100g (BB in general) is far more stable then the Treo will ever be. I give the edge to the 7100.

I have both. It's like comparing a pager and a laptop. I have a lot more fun with the treo 650 and it is much faster but as the Blackberry admin I have to use the 7100 for the corporate email. Treo seems more stable with the latest firmware etc. If push email is your thing then go with the Blackberry. I do have a friend on goodlink with treo 650 and he swears by it.
