Colored Post-It flags work well.

My daughter has the pearl, and was asking me about this. Supposedly there is a program that changes the color of the LED and I confirmed this with someone whom I know has a pearl as well. How can software change it on the pearl, but not on the curve?

And it is only the 8100 Pearl, not the 8110, 8120, or 8130

Just got an 8330 recently. I've been using the post-it flag workaround for awhile and have been happy with it. The problem I have found is this - On the 8110 and the 8310, the led is right below the trackball and easy to place a post-it flag over. On the 8330, the led is way over buried on the left side of the trackball. It's really hard to get a post it flag over the led and if you do, it makes it very dim.
