Red face When WiFi works - need info/help

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys,

I have been a blackberry user for years. And because of high blackberry charges here in the Philippines (they don't offer unlimited data plans here), my monthly bills' always kill me.This is probably because my usage is email heavy and I always am online (YM), and I do have about a 140+ contacts in my YM. -- This is why last February, I switched to a windows mobile phone capable of WiFi. And since I mostly work at home, I can take advantage of my own wifi network and keep my local network data charges to a minimum. I use Agile Messenger and of course [have to] PULL my emails. BUT, my monthly bills have been cut to more than half.

Now that Blackberry has this WiFi capability, I am looking to go back. I recon, if not for the data charges, blackberry's push email and YM feature is way better than getting them from a third party application provider.

Sorry it took long, but this is my question; can anybody tell me if a WiFi on an (say) 8320 is on, and I connect to YM, and send & receive emails, don't I get charge with any kind of GPRS data connection by my telco? I am asking because when I tried a friend's 8820 in my house, and turned off Data connection in settings (to make sure it doesn't use any kind of GPRS connection?), but it won't connect to WiFi. Turning it back on, make connecting to WiFi is no problem. I guess maybe, the 2 goes hand-in-hand. But connecting to my WIFI, receiving and sending emails and connecting to YM, doesn't that use any kind/amount of GPRS connection?

I hope I made sense, and sorry getting to my point took too long. I just hope someone can enlighten me on this one before I make that switch back.

I turned off the mobile network on my 8320 and it was just connected to my wifi at home and I was able to surf the net and get onto yahoo messenger and AIM without any problems. I'm not sure about receiving emails as I only turned it off for a few minutes to test this out. Hope this helps.

I don't know about BIS connections, but you need to have a BES that is configured to support WiFi connections. When you have that you can get email without having the cell radio on.

I use WiFi all the time, even though I don't pay the bill.

Thanks for the reply, Rey. I appreciate this. Ok. hmm.. While your mobile network is off, can you still receive email messages?

And somehow, the 3 services you mentioned; YM, AIM, and surfing the net, I know works. But my question is, don't I get charge of any mobile data/gprs usage? No usage at all whatsoever? Nothing?

On my Bold, the wifi is used as a preference for both BIS, BES and PIN messages, and also browsing etc. The only things that don't work on my Bold when the mobile network is turned off but when I have wifi signal are voice calls and SMS.
