Default Orange UK problems - "call failed"

Please Login to Remove!

I'm getting very fed up with my bold. Sometimes, it just can't keep a signal, and follows the same pattern every time:

I get cut off in the middle of a call with "call failed", then it says "no network" on the screen, waits a bit, shows full signal strength but no network showing, then within half a minute reconnects to orange. I re-dial the call, and get cut off within 30 seconds.

This can happen anywhere - at home, moving, stationery in traffic.

This pattern never used to happen on my curve.

I have a feeling it's to do with switching from 3g to 2g and back again. The problem happens less when I've switched to 2g only mode.

I'm finding as well that the 3g signal strength doesn't work the same way as the 2g signal strength. Basically, it sometimes registers a low signal strength and then suddenly jumps to full, then may stay on full for a minute, then go off and lose the network and maybe switch to 2g. This happens in several different locations, not just at home where I have a poor-to-fair orange signal.

I've had other orange 3g phones and never had this problem, my iphone on o2 doesn't flake out like that. I've also got two friends on Vodafone with Blackberry bolds who HAVEN'T had any issues at all like this.

Also, this is my second bold - orange swapped out my first one because of this.

I had upgraded my previous bold to the firmware from orange france, and with this bold I've just left it on the one that comes from orange UK.

Is it worth upgrading to the east-asia one at the top of this thread?

Do other UK Orange users have this problem? I wonder if this is the same quality problems that are causing orange to stop selling bolds.

Have you tried taking it off AUTOMATIC network selection and forcing it to Orange? Also you can tell it not to try another network when Orange get's weak.

It is worth upgrading to the latest version. .162 is good. .167 is also good, but you have to look for it in the wild (you can find it very easily). I don't understand why so many people on Orange UK complain about the Bold. I am using the Bold on Orange Romania for almost 1 month now, and I have never experienced such issues. I remember indeed some 2G - 3G switching troubles with the original firmware (.92 if I remember correctly - upgraded on day 2), but nothing thereafter.

Thanks, I'll try that, and let you know how I get on

perhaps why Orange has stopped selling the Bold. But since you have it, the newer OS's seem to solve some of the bugs so they are worth a try.

One of my collegues has had the same problem with his Orange Bold.
He has upgraded the f/w to 4.6.0.167 and he has experienced the problem once in the last week.

Only way to fix it was the old battery pull trick.

This is 3g not the bold.
I have been using 3g since 2003 on voda and orange, with nokia's siemens, sony's blackberry's and it was always like that. With line congestions at peak hours, 3g cuts the line, or you dial and there is nothing, even your voice mail

How do you upgrade to 4.6.0.167 when the latest one (east asia) is 4.6.0.162? Or is there something I'm missing here?

The *.162 you are refering to, is an offical BlackBerry firmware release (one supported by a network) - the *.167 is a Beta release (something thats been leaked to the internet)

so using 167 is at your own risk!

PS - if you want the 167 software, if you "Google" for it, you'll find it.
