Default BES sync question from a newbie...

Please Login to Remove!

If my wife's 8330 is activated on her employer's BES, are her Outlook emails, contacts and calendar automatically and continuously being synced with the server, or is this a manual process, either on the phone or via BB Desktop Manager? Also, if new calendar entries are added, is a notification received?

Yes, email, contacts and caldendar should all be automatically syncing to the device via the BES server which polls her corporate mail system for updates every 20 seconds. (unless the system administrator has changed the defaults)

Also, calendar entries will sync, but notifications will not show up on the BB. Reminders will, if you set them.

What happens if I sync with my personal Outlook at home via BB Desktop Manager, and then perform Enterprise Activation. When it then syncs with her Outlook at work, will it keep my personal contacts or overwrite them?

it will overwrite them. the best way to keep them is to export the ones from your home outlook to a pst file or something like that, and then take them to work on a cd and import them thru that outlook.

this will be the only way you are guarranteed to have averything you want on the device.

Before you try doing anything with adding personal stuff, you need to have her check with the BES Admin and/or IT staff. If it is a company provided and paid for device, then they have every right to control how it is used.

Also keep in mind that nothing is personal on a BES enabled BB. If you really want to have access to personal mail, calendar and contacts and use a BES enabled BB, get another device for the personal stuff. Not worth the hassles or the risks.

It's our device. Okay, they just reissued me an activation password. I completed the re-activation successfully and it did NOT wipe out my personal contacts - it simply added to them.

This is not true for Microsoft Exchange environments.

I'll see this, and raise you one.

I had the same scenario - loaded my personal contacts to the phone, then activated BES with work. Not only did my personal contacts stay on the BB, but interestingly, my personal contacts were pulled in by BES and put on my work Outlook box. Very odd.

Anyone know how to stop THAT from happening? A way to not sync contacts?

No odd at all... that's what's supposed to happen.
Synchonization makes the handheld and desktop "equal". Same data on both.

Turn off wireless sync of your address book.
Address Book > Options > Wireless Synchronization = Off

I use my personal BB on BIS and on my company's BES. There are likely more personally-owned BB's on our BES as there are company-issued ones. That is probably why they do not try to use the server functions to control the handhelds. I like having a single address book and calendar with sync'ing between the handheld and my desktop. In the past I used Desktop Manager on both the desktop and a home computer to sync the calendar and contacts. After a recent OS upgrade where I wiped the handheld I just left everything to sync OTA. That works great and keeps my email, calendar, and contacts the same on the work desktop and handheld. The only thing lost is syncing to the home computer. I still do backups using DM but otherwise I just let the system take care of it.
