ok so i'm a newbie to BBs, came from sprint with a Treo Centro which i hated. I know what SMS and MMS are but what is PIN. I assume it stands for Personal Identification Number, but is it like a secret society for BB users or something? another way to message BB users only?

You pretty much answered your own question. You can use it to message other BB owners. It can also send files and contacts, which is awesome. I am curious if there is a restriction on files being sent. All I ever get is pics when my friends are drinking :P

It's IM for BB users. You can send and receive messages using the PIN number of your device.
