Check the Alert process and see what its listed as. If its taking up almost all of the CPU, then stop the service, clear your event logs, then restart it. Its a known issue.

Just noticed you said the System process. That usually points at something with the hardware or OS. We have this process spike to 99% whenever we have a CPU fan go bad on some of our older, cheap servers, for instance.

Thanks for your response, but there are not any alert monitors set so we're clear there.

This same thing happened when we upgraded to 4.0.2 and it spiked the CPU at 100% and system process was taking up about 80%.

We backed down to 4.0.1 and ran at 15% - 30%.

I was hoping, this upgrade would be different.

Does any one know how to uninstall the upgrade and go back to 4.0.1?

Curious as to why you're are still using MSSQL7?
The following tech article does suggest otherwise....

What about your memory usage stats on both the BES & Exchange servers? Micrososft has recommended that the following switch (/3GB) be added to the boot.ini file to correct virtual memory allocation issues. The link explains why...

I had this problem when I upgraded to 4.0.2. It turned out to be a pruning thread stuck on a state db. Search on BES logs for anything that has "No Response".

Sorry about the false info I gave.

we are running sql 2000 not sql 7.

I've been searching through the logs, but all I can find are "No Response" that refers to calendars but nothing major.

Can you educate me more on pruning threads? I dont understand what it is and where to look for it.

tnshurtm,
I couldn't find you article you provided. Can you please provide the entire url?

Not sure whether I'm reading the responses correctly, so this may not be relevant to your situation, but it doesn't matter whether or not you've configured alerts; if the besalert.exe service is running, it may cause this issue by hogging up any available processor time.

We had the problem here, but since we didn't have any alerts, we just stopped the service and set it to Manual. It starts automatically by default.

That is fine. You've already stated that it was the 'System' process. That tends to point to hardware or OS issues not application. Do you have temperature monitoring on the server?

I had this same issue on my BES 4.0 server after applying the SP3 patch to it... I set the BB Alerter service startup type to Manual and have had no problems since... That was "Workaround 2" listed on BlackBerry.com support area...

SP3 is not stable yet... SP2 was even worst than SP3, I was told by our SAM not to install SP2 and to wait for the HF that is coming out for SP3 before installing it as well (should be out the end of this week).

From the SP3 HF1 release notes:
Quote:
SDR 69408 Previously, users on BlackBerry Enterprise Server with large calendars might have caused increased usage of system resources.
This issue applies to version 4.0 SP3 only; it does not apply to earlier or later versions.versions.
I'm not sure however why people are giving advise about the pruning the state db since this is Exchange and not Domino

I read that same SDR 69408 a couple of days ago and Im hoping the HF3 will fix the issue however, we have lost our original cd with the install files on it. I tried to point the HF install to a couple of other instances of Blackberry Enterprise Server.msi but no luck. Does anyone know where I can download 4.0 full or know how I can get around not having the original media?

If you have TSupport, then you can download it at will after you login. Otherwise, you may want to try your luck with RIM, but they were reported on here as turning down those affected by Hurricane Katrina, so the chances are most likely slim.

When it prompts you for an msi file point it the msi that was provided with SP3 since that is the last service pack that was installed

According to RIM, SP3 (possibly HF1 which has been released last week) has addressed this issue.
