Hi,

I would like to understand the "push technology" of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, we're running BES 4.1 with Novell GroupWise 7.

Question: Does my BlackBerry "poll" the BlackBerry Server to "ask" if there's new e-mails and then it gets pushed down to the phone? If so, can this "poll" interval (between the BB device and the Server) be changed?

Reason for the strange question: We've got a couple of BlackBerry Storms (9500) devices recently acquired, their batteries run flat within a day (we've applied all the tricks to lengthen battery life like disable GPS, disable bluetooth, disable roaming network searching etc. etc. etc) but needless to say it did not make a big difference.

Our only "hope" is now that there is indeed some kind of "polling" taking place (once a minute or what ever) that we can decrease in order to save on data transmission and in turn lengthening the battery life of the Storm devices.

Any insight into how the phones and the BB servers "stay in touch" would be greatly appreciated.

No, your device never polls anything.
BES polls your Groupwise mailbox on a schedule (I believe it's every 20 seconds and cannot be changed) and then pushes any new messages to your handheld.

Likely not related to BES at all. What version is the OS on the 9500s? You might try upgrading the devices to a more recent OS if they are out of date.

No can do.

Latest OS on the Storm does help a lot with battery life issues (as Penguin says). You may find that your carrier doesn't support the latest OS though, so you need to decide, as I did, if you are happy to be unsupported to gain this "fix".

Also, and I know it sounds mad but it worked for my Storm, charge it overnight from the mains charger and then run it down and charge it overnight again. After two cycles (I think) of that, it has behaved nicely.
