Question Syncing OWA through BIS - internet bandwidth issue

Please Login to Remove!

I (and a few of my co-workers) have gotten a blackberry storm and now sync wirelessly using Outlook Web Access and BIS. Works great! However our IT guy is complaining that this is now eating up our internet bandwidth because of the traffic generated by BIS logging in and syncing with OWA.

Is there any truth to this?
If so, is there any way to reduce the frequency of polling or are there any other methods to make the sync less bandwidth intense?

Thanks!

Sounds like a pretty sketchy claim by your IT guy. I suppose it's *possible* if the company has some bargain-basement arrangement with your ISP, but even the cheapest kinds of plans should have plenty of bandwidth to handle external mail access. More than likely he's just dodging some work.

You cannot alter the BlackBerry's mail polling schedule or how much data it consumes. I will say that BlackBerry's data compression is among the most efficient, if not THE most efficient, of any smartphone out there.

Sounds like the optimal solution is to get a real IT guy and give this tosser the boot.

Your optimal solution indicates that you have powers of mind reading!

Thanks

I assume you are just syncing your email and not your contacts and calendar, correct? If you are syncing your contacts and calendar I would like to know how you are doing so.

BIS only handles email.

Searched and found this topic, here's the trouble I am having

We have 10-15 Blackberry users setup with BIS, synched using OWA to send/receive work emails.
I see large amounts of https traffic being sent out from the Exchange server to Blackberry servers, (30-40 GB during the past month), these 10-15 users would not receive that much email or send that much in a month

Are there any known issues or workarounds for this type of issue? When the 10-15 Blackberry users' mailboxes combined are 10-15 GB over a few years, 30-40 GB in a month doesn't make sense does it?

Here we have numerous users accessing their local mail through the OWA portal.
Our IT folks have never even noticed a difference from normal traffic (and they will notice when mailboxes are too full).
Seems like an unusual problem that maybe a call to RIM support might be able to tell why this occurs (probably have to start with the cell carrier for this, though)
