Hello,
I've searched, but couldn't find anything on this, but if there is already a thread on this, please let me know

I want to NOT charge my blackberry when connected via USB to my laptop.

I know I can editthe USB INF files to prevent it (by forcing it to be an unrecognized device etc. amongst other things), however I'd rather not .

I would prefer to be able to control when it does and doesn't charge.

I don't know if this is possible, but I figured if anyone would know, it would be somewhere here.

Just a question, why do you not want to charge the device when connected to the laptop?

If laptop, with only battery power, it would drain the battery.

Because it reduces the number of charge cycles available on the battery every time you plug and unplug it from the laptop. If the battery is full, there is no reason to charge it.

I tether my phone frequently... i want to dictate when to charge and when not to charge....

You *might* be able to prevent this by using an unpowered USB hub. Unfortunately it might also prevent a data connection to your pc.

I'm finding OEM batteries for my Bold for next to nothing on eBay. I'm not really worried about losing a charging cycle or two.

What about taping over the power pin on the usb connector on the PC side? I was going to say cut the wire or break the pin off, but tape might work.

Disregard this. Tried it and the PC doesn't register the phone with that pin taped up.

I guess I fail to see the problem.

It isn't that much of a battery drain on the laptop and it isn't that big a deal as far as cycles go. Lithium batteries are much different than the old ni-cads. Heck, most of us will have several new devices by the time we would reach the charge cycle limit. Last time I checked, it was about 3+years of every day charging (somewhere around 1500 cycles).

Plug in the BB, let it sync and then unplug. What is so hard about that?

Hmm maybe I'm missing something but why does the BBF-FAQ recommend that you try to keep your device/battery "topped-off" throughout the day?

I don't know. I don't agree at all with that recommendation, mainly on the basis that I feel it defeats the purpose of having a mobile device, but that is personal opinion.

I truly don't think it helps with that either, but again that is simply my opinion.

So, you want to use the connection for data transfer but you dont want to charge the device. Intewesting. I'd like to do that too so that it does'nt suck up my laptops battery while data transfer.
