Default Possible to use BB 7280 with Data sim(no BB Account)

Hello,
Newbie question I am hoping some of you can answer? I currently have a $79 a month unlimited data plan with AT&T on a GPRS Card. I also just came across a BB 7280 from a friend. I was able to add it to my account list of devices with AT&T but they are telling me that I cannot use my sim card in the 7280? They said I would be required to get a seperate BB account and pay another $49 a month. I really do not think its fair since I already pay $79 a month for my laptop and I can only use the sim in one device at a time.(besides my BB would use alot less data).

I do not care about having pushed emails and am fine with using a third party pop3 mail program to get my mail. I have read some post recently regarding other members who have used their BB with a active data sim/phone card but everytime I try turing it on with my unlimited data sim in i get "Data connection rejected".

I see that someone mentioned they had the same problem and it was because of having 4.0 installed. I downgraded to 3.7 and still have the same problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

John

Is the 7280 SIM locked to another carrier?

Default no, its a AT&T EDGE/GPRS PC Card Sim and AT&T BB 728

The unlimted data plan I currently have is with AT&T on a Sony Ericsson GPRS/EDGE PC Card($79/month) and the Blackberry 7280 is currently locked to AT&T.

Just reinstalled 4.0 AT&T handhead software and set TCP/APN to Proxy per another post and still get "data connection refused"

AT&T customer care NO HELP. They said basically pay the $79 for the laptop and $49 for the BB. No way to use Sim card from PC Card in BB.

Although I figured that since its not in their financial interest to offer it.

Thanks

I don't know if AT&T is the same, but with Cingular, the normal GPRS data plan and the BlackBerry data plan are different. Maybe that's the problem.

ATT has each device configured/provisioned differently. If you had a Treo with data service you could NOT swap it with a Blackberry, PocketPC, Nokia 6820 etc. Each device type required a different SIM. I know because I had all these devices and wanted to be able to use a single SIM in all of them.

Don't know if this will change under the "new" management with Cingular...

I don't think it's necessarily the SIM, but the plan you get with it. One of our coworkers just moved from her regular cingular nokia with full internet access, then put the SIM into a blackberry and got no data. A simple call to cingular to add blackberry data worked though, at no extra charge.

Yes, but if you wanted to have seamless service you would need to have a seperate SIM for each device to avoid you having to call Cingular each time you swapped the SIM into the new device. I inquired directly with Cingular to see if I could have a SINGLE SIM configured for lets say a Treo 600, a Blackberry, and a Nokia 6820 at the same time and their answer was NO.

Yeah no doubt in that situation. I can't see why anyone would want to carry so many toys around with them though :P

Testing my good man.... testing! I'd need a bandolier to carry around all those at once... though I've been know to have a 7100, 7290, and a treo at the same time.

I know I know... I do the same, but I rarely carry them around at the same time. I have to go through enough metal detectors on the way to work every day without pulling out half a dozen phones and gadgets every time I walk in a building :(

Whenever you use a BlackBerry unit for email, you must have BlackBerry service activated on your account with your airtime provider. Although it uses GPRS technology, BlackBerry service is also used and the SIM must be provisioned for that. Regardless of carrier, you must have that service activated.

Sometimes it will work for a day or two, but eventually it gets cut off.
