Hi All,

Our company have 200 users using Black Berries (BES 4.1). We blocked the users capability to download 3rd party applications. Now we have some discussions to uplift the policy.

Please could someone advice if this is ok regarding organization security. Are there any apps which are supposed to be risky for corporate environment ?

I would much appreciate if someone can explain the pros and cons in this regard.

Imagine 30 sales men with 1000+ contacts accidentally sends out facbook invites from his device to all his contacts and recieves all the requests back on company email because he can do it now.

There are a few malware type apps you might want to blacklist so users cannot install them. GhandiCam was a pretty scary one.

I find it easier to put a process around it and remove the block as needed or if possible package and push the needed app. Now I in no way want to be the "App Nazi" and be the decision maker on if a App has business value or not. Considering your user base it shouldn't be a huge effort to put some controls around it to lessen any risk.

Publish a policy that clearly states that while you are not stopping 3rd party apps from being downloaded and installed, you will not support applications. If a 3rd party app fux up the BlackBerry, "OH WELL." Reload the device from scratch and restore only supported info.

That's what I do....
