Default Delivering Video to handsets

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I am new to BlackBerry, so I may be asking silly things...

I am looking at delivering 5 to 10 videos (each 1 to 2 minutes) to a series of BackBerry handset within a company. I'm not sure where to start...

I was thinking of making the videos (say AVIs) available over a web server and ask people to browse to them via the BlackBerry browser, but pretty quickly I'm hitting issues with too large requests (HTTP error 413). Also, this is not a very elegant way of delivering the video, as ideally, they get installed on the handset and people would access them by launching an application.

Is there an easy way of writing an application that would do that? Would this have to be done in Java? via Eclipse? How would the application be installed in the end (if it is made available as a download file via HTTP, it will probably be too large as well!).

Sorry for all these questions, I'm just a little bit lost right now. Any help and suggestions welcome!

Thank you very much.

Since you specified the BlackBerry Browser I'm assuming your company has a BES. In that case you could up the maximum file size, but that just pushes the problem further down. Blackberries have limited Application Memory, so you will probably want to make sure that the videos end up on the SDCard or the Device Memory if equipped (as the 9000 is). You probably don't want to leave this up to the user as they can easily get it wrong and cause you and or IT support grief.

You could do this with a Java program written using either the JDE or Eclipse with the BlackbBerry plugin. You may be able to do it with JavaScript using BlackBerry Widgets if you have the OS to support that.

Thanks a lot for the info. Very useful, in particular regarding the Widget SDK. I'm having a look at this right now. Am I right in thinking that I can build a local app (installed on the device) by using just HTML and Javascript without Java (i.e. a bit like Adobe Air)?

I haven't actually used Widget SDK, and I'm not familiar with Adobe Air, if I understand the BlackBerry Widgets documentation, yes you should be able to build an app with HTML and JavaScript. The WSDK allows you to provide the web pages with permission to access data, etc. on the device.
