Default Pop3 program or sinmiliar

Please Login to Remove!

With all of whats in the news about the BB network going to be shutdown in the near future, my company would like to have a plan in place when that happens. We use a BES server, we want to either install a simple POP3 program to be able to access email on the device using the pop3 protocol or be able to setup the BB to do the same and be able to access the work email on the device. I apologize if this has already been addressed. Thanks.

If RIM is forced to shut down BlackBerry service in the United States you will not be able to get any mail on it. No BIS, no BES, nothing, period. If RIM pays up or uses their workaround you dont have to do anything, business as usual.

Why is that d_fisher?

Wouldn't you be able to install a application like "G-Mail Mobile" and then use the Blackberry's EDGE or GPRS connection to send/recevie mail? I don't see how the RIM network being down would have any effect on that.

The patent dispute is based around how messages are pushed to the BlackBerry. All pushed email is sent to your BlackBerry (based on the PIN) through the RIM NOC. If RIM loses the case and shuts down US services they stop it at the RIM NOC. Doesnt matter if the mail is from BES, BIS, or Gmail mobile. Its all pushed to the BlackBerries using the same push technology. Once this happens, you essentually have a smart phone. You will be able to access webmail by visiting the webpage.

Well exactly.

Isn't that what the OP user is looking for? A way to access POP3 e-mail outside of having it pushed to the BB via BIS pr BES.

G-Mail Mobile uses your Blackberry's internet connection. It has nothing to do with BES or BIS.

You'd have a smartphone which still would have the ability to run applications (one being G-Mail Mobile) which allow you to send/receive e-mail using your carrier's internet connection just like you'd do if you owned a Treo or PPC based device.

Correct that is what I am looking for, something to use the pop3 protocol to be able to access our mail servers using the carriers internet connection.

I dont know much about GMail Mobile, but if it is simply using the internet connection then it very well may work. I dont think we will have to worry about it. There will not be any interuption in service. RIM will either win the case, pay up, or impliment their work around. If they stop service for even one day I believe that corporate America will lose all faith in them and will find another company to do business with.

The only thing I can think of is to have your users set up G-Mail accounts and the have them forward their POP3 based accounts to their G-Mail accounts. Then they could use the G-Mail Mobile application on their Blackberries to send/receive mail. You could also set up the G-Mail account so that e-mails sent from the Blackberry looked as if they were coming from the POP3 address.

There appear to be a few other applications out there which allow you to send/receive POP3 mail. I'd suggest looking at some of them as well.

The Gmail Mobile app does not use push technology. Neither does email accessed via the device's browser.

I don't know anything about Gmail mobile either, but I doubt it will allow us to use pop3 to connect to our companys mail using pop3, maybe to itself..

I never said it would.

What I said was you'd have to have your users forward their POP3 based e-mail accounts to their newly created G-Mail e-mail addresses.

These 2 java midlets work to read pop3 email on my BB 7520

mMail, go to www.mmail.pl, 5 day trial, one time cost about $5
only supports pop3 accounts

Mobile Mail, www.movamail.com, 60 day trial, costs $29.99/year
Mobile Mail supports pop3 and yahoo, hotmail, aol

On my blackberry 7520, the Mobile Mail app blanks out my screen all the time, just remember to hit the # key to bring up the menu or 7 to exit

I am using nextels native TCP. I am not going thru MDS
