Default Where are the water indicators for the 8100?

Please Login to Remove!

I noticed there is a water indicator on the battery (the sticker with the red x's) but where are the indicators inside the unit, for those people that dissasembled the phone. Also I noticed that the trackball becomes darker when exposed to liquid. Has anyone experienced that? Could the trackball be a water indicator itself?

thanks guys!

Bizarre questions considering no explanation as to what happened.

Did you drop it into water?

Yes I did. Should have been obvious when I wrote this:

"Also I noticed that the trackball becomes darker when exposed to liquid."

Obviously the unit has been exposed to liquid.
I would appreciate help in finding out where are all the indicators are, thanks!

What I was implicity asking is HOW it got wet. Most people would give an account. What, did it fall in the toilet or something?

That might help in determining if the indicators went off. Depends in what it went into and how long.

There are two that I know of and speculation of one other deep inside the case.

I was driving and my bottle splashed water onto the seat where the blackberry was lying. So there were splashes of water. I DO know that at least one splash landed on the trackball, because the trackball won't scroll up anymore...

I am getting warranty replacement and want to check the water indicators. Where are the water indicators that you know of.

One is on the battery, and I see a small white sqaure sticker in the battery compartment too. That is still white.

The small white square is the only other that I know about. So you are probably OK.

Let it dry out to see if the ball will work. There are magnets in there and water can affect the operation.

If those detectors are not showing water damage, then no one will notice anything else. The trackball just stopped working.

But, did any water get under the display?

no thank god.

What I'm concerned about is the it was COKE! (Sorry forgot to mention that) I know that coke is corrosive and I really want to get this exchanged. They already sent me the replacement. Nothing got under the display but I'm thinking even though the white water damage indicator in the battery compartment is still white, if they see a gunky coke stain where the trackball contacts are, they would reject my return under warranty.

Do you think I should go through the dissassembly process and make sure there are no telltale signs of coke gunk near the trackball?

The trackball is very intermittent when scrolling up. I know there was damage.
thanks for your help!

PS: Whats very interesting is that the trackball is MUCH darker than the replacement phone's trackball. I think it has to do with the liquid touching it. Anyone have this issue?

I don't think on the exchange that they will disassemble the entire phone. They don't have time. They will simply look at the water indicators.

Don't take it apart. Too much risk and also you may cause indicators to show you disassembled it.

I would have to go out on a limb and say that COKE is alot worse than water for your phone. But of course, you already know that.

Isn't Coke on the news once in awhile, where they show stuff that has been soaking in Coke for a few days and the stuff looks like it has been eaten by some sort of space alien? Can't recall, but I think it was Coke.

hahaha thanks guys. this isn't the first time i've spilled coke on an electronic device. ..coke will corrode circuitry...

Yea, i'll just return it.
I already received the advanced replacement phone.

i'll just ship the original back without tampering with it.
so we all acknowledge that there are only 2 water indicators, the white sticker in the battery compartment and on the battery itself.

what about the trackball turning into a darker color. I find that odd.
The trackball on the replacement phone is white while my older phone is darker (but still opaque enough to see the light through)

I saw my friends phone and the trackball is white as well...

You are just insisting that someone is going to know the answer to this one...lol.

Coke is a powerful liquid. It stains. If the trackball is not working, chances are the coke came in contact with it and discolored the trackball. It would have become discolored slightly thru usage anyway. They probably will not even notice it.

So you have done this before

And apparently your OP about water indicators was to find out about such before you packed up the phone for return and NOT because you were considering initially contacting the carrier for a claim?

In other words, you wanted to double check before completing your CRIME
