Default BWC and BES question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all. Quick question, I currently have a Blackberry for personal use (using BWC for pop mail). I work at a bank that offers BES for work email. I wanted to hook up BES for work email to my current Blackberry and IT said they could do it BUT for security reasons, my Blackberry could not have BWC for personal email. My question is this:

Does IT have the capability to cripple BWC on my Blackberry if they hook up BES or could I just say I am going to remove it, have them hook up the BES then after they are done, I go back and resetup my BWC connection. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default Well ask this in the BES forum

but I am pretty sure that I have read that they can under the IT policy. Now that being said, since the BWC email doesn't go through their servers, what is the security risk. Are you sure they understand?

I have worked with 2 of the biggest banks in the country, and they have very strict policies regarding email. They aren't just their own security groups doing it, they are actually regulated by the FTC on this. Basically any email that entered the bank's network had to do so through a sequence of servers that were periodically audited by the FTC. Since technically your BB becomes part of the banks network when you activate with their BES, any email that comes to your device through any other method could be considered a violation. I know it sounds extreme, but at that level of IT security, the policies normally go beyond reasonable to drive the probabilities of issues as low as possible.

I know there is a specific IT Policy rule that can bet set that forces all outbound email through the BES and prevents users from sending email messages using other email services. This rule does NOT prevent users from receiving messages from other email services. There may be other rules that can be used to prevent even receiving emails from other services but I'm not sure.....

I just re-read my post above - I should have made it clear that I was taking a guess based on experience with IT security at other banks. Didn't intend to sound like I was 100% knowledgeable about it.
