Default BES 4.1 Upgrade - N00b

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All!

I am getting ready to upgrade our BES 4.0.1 server to BES 4.1.3. I have plans to take a snapshot of the BES server and run it in Virtual Server in the event of a failure.

Is there a way that while I am working on the upgrade of our production server, I can have the Virtual BES running to minimize downtime to the users?

Also, if any of you BES Guru's have any tips or gotchas that I should be aware of while doing the upgrade I would really appreciate any input.

Thanks for your time!

Do you have 2 SRP keys? you have to be careful not to have them both running at the same time or you will be disabled by RIM and trying to get a hold of them these days is like trying to catch the tooth fairy.

Unfortunately, no, I don't have 2 SRP keys. Can we just turn the services off on the production box while the upgrade is being done? Leaving the virtual server running to handle the message flow?

That will work. I'm guessing the virtual server is just temp? Users may have some problems with database and sync issues depending on how long the BES is down and how many messages get delivered.

+1, you have to disable the one that is running just before you turn the service on for the upgraded box. The setup asks you if you want to turn services on or leave off. I always say leave off and then disable them until I am sure that I want to turn them on.

FYI: If you have the DB on a remote SQL server, your life will be a lot easier as well.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.7196/1662; zh; U; ssr))

If u're running ESX server 3 (VI3), then you may take a snapshot and clone a copy of old BES. Then change your BES copy's network to NAT and start, so that it can access internet and LAN if necessay.
