have the last name of the user displayed first when searching.

If I go into the address book and then go to 'options' I can change the setting to display the last name first, but say for example I want to go into messages and then compose an email from there - if I start to search for a user by their last name it still shows the first name first, although if I continue to enter the name it does start to show the last name but only after I enter more of the name.

There are a couple of thousand contacts in my list so if I cant quite remember the entire surname its lists a fairly large amount of irrelevant names.

Is there any way I can have last names first when searching for a contact when composing an email?

If you can't remember the surname then why are you searching by surname? Do you get a large number of irrelevant results when entering the first name?

Well say for example I know the surname starts with L and it could be Lin, Lan, Lon, that would return lots of random names

I worked it out anyway - its in options > languages
