There's a way to remove the trackball and clean it. Do a search on here for trackball cleaning and hopefully that will fix your problem. If you have insurance on your phone, I would also suggest swapping it out.

No need for insurance. It is a known issue and will be covered under warranty. I have replaced several for customers as well as one of my own under warranty. Call your carriers customer care department and ask to be transfered to blackberry support. They will then troubleshoot the phone and the result will be them sending you a new Pearl under warranty.
